Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia. These are the three men whose inability to score points in the Ryder Cup cost Europe the chance of a fourth win in a row. Garcia had not been well a week earlier and did not seem to be at his best all week. Westwood had had tonsillitis a few weeks earlier and this may have contributed to his sub-par performance. Harrington just looked flat out tired.
The Open and US PGA champion played very well in snatching a half in the opening morning's foursomes with Robert Karlsson but from the moment that Harrington and McDowell lost in the afternoon fourballs with Graeme McDowell, he looked a jaded man. As McDowell went from strength to strength gaining 2½ points thereafter, Harrington went the other way, losing the Saturday morning foursomes, being rested on Saturday afternoon and then losing to Chad Campbell in the singles. Up to that time Campbell had been comfortably the worst player on the US team.
What would Faldo have given for at least two of Europe's Big Three to have been on better form? Just a couple more points would have made all the difference. Faldo made a number of off course errors. His speech at the opening ceremony was far too long and far too immodest. His performances at several press conference were odd too. And his handling of Garcia and Westwood on Saturday morning left a lot to be desired.
His worst mistake was probably to overload the bottom of the Europe order on Sunday when one of McDowell, Poulter, Westwood or Harrington might have been better placed to have been higher up the order.
Poulter's form was remarkable. He was Europe's top points scorer with four our of five, and his energy kept some of his flagging teammates going. Never before can such a criticised golfer have answered his critics so powerfully.
But give credit to the US too. Azinger captained beautifully. His Kentuckians in JB Holmes and Kenny Perry played very well, as did Boo Weekley. Anthony Kim was devastating against Garcia and is clearly a force for the future in this event.
What would Faldo have done to have had Harrington, Garcia or Westwood firing at full throttle?

I have the good fortune to say that I placed my money on the winning side. Faldo thinks Faldo first, Faldo second and Faldo everywhere else.

Faldo is a class act that DOES NOT deserve the treatment he is getting from the Euro press. The one thing that Westwood got right, is that it was the players that lost, NOT the Captain. Faldo is Euro's most decorated player, perhaps of all-time. If Euro does want him, he is always welcome in US!
Brett, Radcliff, USA
boo-hoo europe lost cuz their players didnt perform westwood harrington and garcia didnt win a match. westwood is a cry-baby. at least faldo paddy and sergio took loss like men and didnt make excuses. please put blame on players who didnt perform and give americans credit no one gave us credit!!!
mike, birmingham , USA
John, you're so right. Starting with John Hopkins who so irritated Faldo at the pre-match conference about the pairings list. Were he a US journalist I could understand it, but is he suggesting that it was his job to get a really honest answer out of Faldo even if it were to cost Europe the cup ?
edward, London, England
Why did people think that Europe was going to win all the time? Teh US Team used to look very good on paper a few time before. Nothing in golf is guaranteed and each round is never quite the same.

M. Taylor, Brampton,
Maybe if the British press wasn't so eager to slay Faldo, it might have been an easier. week for him. Overall, you guys were a disgrace. It was a great week of golf and the Press let it be overshadowed by your stories on Faldo, shame on all of you.
John, Bellevue, USA
Why is everyone so shocked the Americans won. This event has been played 37 times, and the yanks have won it 25 times. Britain was so bad at it they had to recruit the rest of europe just to make it competitive. Faldo made some mistakes, but none of the competitors helped him out.
Daniel, Melbourne, Austrailia
Faldo's big three players did not come through. It was a great Ryder Cup with Faldo and Azinger providing great pre-event entertainment. I suggest they both remain captain's for the next Ryder Cup in 2010 and that Clarke and Monty earn their way on this team!!!
John Mac Millan, Kingston, Ontario, Canada
Utter nonsense. Unless that is, every decision that precedes a loss is by definition a mistake. Faldo did fine. A couple of European players didn't fire and the middle ranked Americans played above themselves. No more. Don't overshadow what was a fantastic sporting contest.
Joseph Wright, Seattle (Brit expat), USA
If the bottom was overloaded then surely by implication the top was weak. So how come the top 4 managed 2.5 points and the bottom 2 lost against relatively weak opposition. To win you need to score points throughout the team not just at the top. Faldo didn't miss the puts or hit it in the water!
Andy, York,
The whole event was brilliant from start to finish so don't spoil it by being wise after the event and blaming Faldo for what might have been.
Weekly and Perry will probably never play so well again and Harrington and Garcia probably won't play so badly. The best team won on the 'day'. Fair enough.
Ed Potter, Pattaya, Thailand
Some incredible logic here: Faldo's biggest mistake apparently was to "overload the bottom of the Europe order " with players like Westwood and Harrington who were consistently losing matches? Sergio should also have played at the tail-end! Now Poulter - that WAS a mistake ...
