Anthony Kim beat Sergio García, 5 and 4
Kim was seven under after 14 holes and had ten threes. It was an extraordinary performance and far too much for García, who looked out of sorts. After going three down, García finally won a hole at the 10th but then missed a two-footer at the 11th. He lost the 12th after a brilliant approach from Kim, made a terrible mess of the 13th and the match was over on the next.
Hunter Mahan halved with Paul Casey
Mahan produced the putt of the Ryder Cup on the 17th with a 25-foot effort for a birdie to go one up with one to play. He then produced one of the mistakes of the weekend, finding water off the 18th tee. Casey secured a birdie with a huge six-iron and two putts to halve the match.
Robert Karlsson beat Justin Leonard, 5 and 3
Karlsson nearly recorded a hole-in-one on the 8th to go two up and from that moment he looked unstoppable. The Swede finished Saturday’s four-balls in inspired fashion and carried his form through to thrash Leonard. Karlsson’s victory was forged between the 4th hole and 10th, going four ahead in that stretch.
Justin Rose beat Phil Mickelson, 3 and 2
A stunning victory over the world No 2 for the English player in his first Ryder Cup. Rose went ahead on the long par-four 6th after Mickelson’s putt for par horseshoed out. A duffed chip from Mickelson on the 7th put Rose farther ahead before a superb birdie on the par-five 10th stretched the gap to three holes. That become four when Rose birdied the 12th. Mickelson pulled a hole back, but Rose held his nerve to sink a long putt on the 16th to seal the win.
Kenny Perry beat Henrik Stenson, 3 and 2
Perry said that this was the crowning moment of his career. He made birdies on the 3rd, 4th and 5th holes, and Stenson’s cause was not helped by finding water three times on the 7th. Even though Perry was troubled by a damaged shoulder from the turn, Stenson could not make inroads.
Boo Weekley beat Oliver Wilson, 4 and 2
Wilson started well with a birdie at the 2nd to take an early lead against the crowd favourite. But that was as good as it got as Weekley blasted to eight under par by the end of the match. Weekley was inspired after holing a bunker shot at the 7th for an eagle and instantly following up with a birdie on the 8th.
J. B. Holmes beat Soren Hansen, 2 and 1
This turned out to be a crucial match and Hansen could not cling on to the one-hole lead he held at the 10th. Holmes’s big hitting proved vital over the final few holes, with his birdie on the 16th giving him the edge after the pair had sparred through most of the round. If that blow stunned Hansen, then what happened at the 17th was a true knockout. Holmes nearly threw himself off his feet smashing a drive before hitting a wedge to three feet. Hansen was off the green but his long putt lipped out and Holmes sank the ball from close range.
Jim Furyk beat Miguel Ángel Jiménez, 2 and 1
The match that eventually ended the competition, with Furyk always too steady for the Spaniard. Jiménez was only level with Furyk on the 6th, when he holed from a bunker, 7th and 9th holes and slipped to three holes down by the 15th. A bogey by Furyk on the 16th gave the Europeans hope but Jiménez could only halve the 17th when his birdie putt slid past the hole.
Graeme McDowell beat Stewart Cink, 2 and 1
It says something about McDowell’s performance this week that Nick Faldo put him near the bottom of his line-up, which he thought might be crucial. McDowell cruised to victory.
Ian Poulter beat Steve Stricker, 3 and 2
Poulter proved his critics wrong with four points out of five after playing in every session. He opened with four threes. Stricker did not stand a chance.
Ben Curtis beat Lee Westwood, 2 and 1
A banker for Europe, it seemed, but Curtis defied logic, form and Westwood to win the 14th, 15th and 17th holes to sprint to victory.
Chad Campbell beat Padraig Harrington, 2 and 1
Campbell played like a hacker during most of this Ryder Cup — and then the American stepped up to beat the winner of the past two majors. Harrington was off-colour as well in a scrappy and ultimately meaningless contest.
