Severiano Ballesteros has been discharged from hospital as he recovers from multiple operations on a brain tumour.

The Spanish golfer had the tumour diagnosed after losing consciousness at Madrid Airport early last month. He underwent an fourth operation at La Paz hospital on December 2 to reduce pressure on his brain caused by an edema (swelling in spaces that surround tissues and organs) and to remove remaining tumour tissue after three previous operations.

Ballesteros was moved to the hospital's intensive care unit following the treatment, but the five-time major winner has now recovered enough to be discharged.

"The patient Severiano Ballesteros has been discharged this morning by the Department of Neurosurgery and has already left the hospital," a hospital statement read. "He will continue to have outpatient treatment in the Departments of Radiotherapy and Medical Oncology."

The hospital also revealed there would be a further statement later today on the golfer's official website www.seveballesteros.com.
