In The Spike Bar last week we implored Sandy Lyle to stop whingeing about not being made Ryder Cup captain. He was in danger of becoming monotonous and diminishing his already tiny chance of being selected for the role he coveted. Put a sock in it Sandy, we said.
Unfortunately, we did not ask him to keep quiet about anything to do with golf and now Lyle has done the opposite of putting a sock in it. He has opened his mouth and accused Colin Montgomerie, captain of Europe's Ryder Cup team in 2010, of cheating at a tournament in Indonesia where Montgomerie appeared to drop his ball incorrectly after a rain delay. "Dropping the ball badly is a form of cheating" Lyle said.
Then, going in with both feet and seemingly unaware of the pit he was digging for himself, he continued. "And there have been other times where he has been called in to see videos." That was a spectacularly unsubtle reference to an incident at the 2002 Volvo Masters when Montgomerie was asked by a rules official to watch TV footage that appeared to show his ball moving after he had addressed it. Montgomerie confirmed he had not grounded his club and therefore not committed an offence.
Sandy is a lovely bloke, but what on earth is he doing saying these things? Did he honestly think he had a chance of getting the Ryder Cup captaincy? If he did, then that has gone. There is as much chance of Lyle being named captain in a future Ryder Cup as there is of Young Tom Morris. So has any possibility of being named a vice-captain to Montgomerie at Celtic Manor next year, which Montgomerie said was a possibility last week at Loch Lomond.
And to think that before Montgomerie was appointed captain he said several times that he would support Lyle as a future captain. Montgomerie did not deserve this broadside from a fellow Scot.
