Great Britain’s track cyclists ended the second night of racing here in jubilant mood after winning two further gold medals, a silver and a bronze, and continuing to dominate the World Track Championships.
In the men’s team pursuit, Bradley Wiggins took his second gold medal after he and his three teammates, Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas and Paul Manning, comfortably defeated Ukraine in a one-sided final.
A few minutes later, Chris Hoy, the Olympic kilometre time-trial champion, outsprinted Theo Bos, of the Netherlands, to claim his first world Keirin title. Hoy’s teammate, Ross Edgar, finished in the bronze-medal position.
“Success breeds success,” Wiggins said as he watched Hoy and Edgar celebrate. “We are on a roll now. Even Johnny Bellis, who’s just an 18-year-old lad, was disappointed not to get a medal because everybody else has got one.”
If victory in the team pursuit was predicted, the biggest surprise came from Rebecca Romero, a silver medal-winner in rowing at the Athens Olympics. Romero, who began cycling only a year ago, took a silver medal in the women’s individual pursuit in her first World Championships. She set a British record with her qualifying time, but was overwhelmed by the power of the defending world champion, Sarah Hammer, of the United States, in the final.
Romero’s journey, from ex-rower struggling to master a new discipline to potential world champion, exemplifies Britain’s ability to develop raw talent. “Twelve months ago, I was wobbling all over the track doing rubbish times,” she said.
Now, Romero has her eyes set on a medal-winning performance in the Olympic Games in Beijing next year. The 27-year-old’s pursuiting style is still in its infancy and lacks the long-legged fluency of Wiggins, but there is significant room for improvement.
“There’s a lot more to come,” David Brailsford, the Britain team manager, said, referring both to Romero’s talent and to the possibility of further success in the final 48 hours of these championships.
If Romero is a rough diamond, then Wiggins is very much the finished article in the pursuit, although his anonymity in road racing’s equivalent, the prologue time-trial, continues to baffle Britain management.
With that in mind, Chris Boardman, who successfully transferred his own pursuiting skills to road racing and in particular, the Tour de France prologue, will advise Wiggins in the build-up to this year’s Tour prologue in London on July 7.
“I can’t understand how he can’t transfer his power from a wooden track on to a tarmac road,” Boardman said.
