The thought that maybe, just maybe, Jimmy White would never win the World Championship began to germinate in 1992. He led Stephen Hendry 14-8 in the final and was playing with supreme self-confidence when, through a combination of factors, the wheels began to detach.

Hendry won the 1990 World Championship but was the victim of his own success the following year. Having reached one final after another he arrived in Sheffield burned out and lost 13-11 to Steve James in the quarter-finals.

More disappointment looked to be brewing when White seized control but having glued together a clearance in the twenty fourth frame with a do or die, dead weight brown that reduced his deficit to 14-10 entering the closing session, Hendry proved unstoppable. After adding two tight frames on the colours to trail only 14-12, Hendry engaged overdrive.

It suddenly dawned on White that a defeat, which even his most pessimistic follower would have found difficult to countenance at 14-8, was now a real possibility.

Hendry compiled an assured century to draw level at 14-14 and from 16-14 recorded two more to complete his ten frame-winning streak to the line in style. They also met in the final in 1993. Hendry won 18-5 with a session to spare.
