Emirates Team New Zealand have won the Louis Vuitton Cup, taking the fifth race in the best of nine series for a 5-0 whitewash over Italy's Luna Rossa. The Kiwis will now go on to challenge Alinghi for the 32nd America's Cup which starts here on June 23.
With skipper Dean Barker at the helm NZL 92 secured the right to tackle the Swiss defender for sport's oldest prize with a 22 second win over the Italians.
Never in the history of the Louis Vuitton Cup has the final proved so one-sided and the margin of the New Zealand team's superiority augurs well for their upcoming clash with Alinghi.
And they will need all the boost this result brings as they go about trying to redress the balance after Alinghi brushed them aside 5-0 off Auckland in 2003.
Aggressive tactics from both teams in the pre-start resulted in their respective bows crossing the start line together with Luna Rossa, who came in on the starboard side, winning the right where the stronger breeze was predicted.
It was neck and neck early on in the run to the first mark, the lead see-sawing between the pair until Luna Rossa, enjoying their best start of the final, eventually pulling 10m clear.
ITA 94, which received unspecified modifications overnight, tacked first as they fought to prolong their America's Cup dream at least for one more day.
But, as in the first four races, Barker soon had their measure and the Kiwis, maintaining their record of having led around every mark of this final so far, rounded the first turn with a delta of 20secs.
With the breeze struggling to rise above nine knots New Zealand's' weathermen and tacticians were once again reading the conditions better but Luna Rossa, battling for their America's Cup lives, doggedly kept tabs to round mark two the same distance adrift.
Down the third beat Luna Rossa had closed the gap to 30m or just over one boat length with a series of neat tacks under Australian helmsman James Spithill.
But to ITA 94's misfortune they were unable to maintain that pressure and the Kiwis passed the final mark again with a 20s cushion.
From there New Zealand held off ITA 94's spirited last gasp attack to capture the Cup and their America's Cup passport. For the record this was their 27th win from 32 races since the Louis Vuitton began two months ago.
New Zealand are aiming for their third America's Cup crown after capturing the 1995 and 2000 editions.

Good Story - but would like to have seen a more regular Americas Cup section in Sport on line with some more in depth reports. This is the Formula One equivalent event of the sailing world and is backed by some of the largest companies and involves many interesting characters both on and off the water. It attracts massive coverage in many countries. Britain has a wealth of sailing talent spread throughout the Americas cup challengers and defender but no British based Challenge this time round. If this event and sailing in general received more coverage, maybe sponsorship and support in Britain would be more forthcoming.

'sport's oldest prize'? Surely Henley Regatta had been going for a couple of decades before the America's Cup was instituted. and even then the races for the Doggettt's Coat and Badge had already been going for 100 years.

Fantastic news! Everyone here in Auckland is buzzing about it and to win so comprehensively adds a little more reassurance to the final challenge ahead. Having lost so abysmally to Alinghi in '03, Dalton can really take a big bow for getting the team back on track and achieving the necessary goals.
Some of the media has gone on about why the Kiwi sailors have remained a little po-faced with each win. Well today you saw the reason - one cup down, one to go!
TNZ need to keep the confidence and the momentum within the team high in order to challenge successfully. Nervous late-night times ahead for some of us.....

Team New Zealand won the Louis Vuitton Cup Final 5-0 once before, in 1995. That year they went on to win the Americas Cup 5-0 off Denis Connor. That team had Russell Coutts at the helm and it was when Coutts and the core of the 95 team NZ crew went to the Swiss syndicate Alinghi under patronage that Alinghi were able to beat New Zealand, in the last Americas Cup. Since then Coutts has decided the conditions of the patronage were objectionable and Alinghi hasn't had him driving them towards sailing perfection.
It remains to be seen how significant Switzerland is as a sailing nation without Coutts and whether New Zealand sailing can recover from the body blow they were dealt after 95 when the Swiss bought off their team.
I hope yesterday's result means they can.

Great work ETNZ! NZ is proud! NZL 92 is a sleek, mean sailing machine! Bring it on Alinghi! Let's take the Auld Mug back to the Hauraki Gulf!!! Good Luck! :D

Fabulous result and heartening for the challenge ahead . The nature of the wins is encouraging as boat speed at this point seems superior. Well done and all the best.
