Five ways that Joe Calzaghe must adopt if he is to beat Mikkel Kessler.

Start fast
There is a good chance that Kessler will be shaken early on by the experience of boxing in front of 50,000 people, the majority of whom will be against him. It is important that Calzaghe does not let the Dane settle early so he should attack from the opening bell.

Sideways movement
Kessler is a stand-up boxer with great power in his right hand. But if Kessler is moving in and out in straight lines, Calzaghe must vary his angle of attack so as not to offer the right hand a target.

Dictate the pace
Calzaghe can be a master at forcing his pace on an opponent, engaging him when he wants and staying out of range when he wants, to draw an opponent forward or take a break.

Use the jab
The jab is one of Kessler’s best weapons, so it is important to beat him to it to throw the Dane off his work.

Switch plans
Calzaghe thinks on his feet and can switch game plan mid-bout. The speed of his work could overwhelm Kessler, but constantly changing the angle and speed of attack can keep him guessing.
