Tributes were paid today to a British cycling champion who was killed in a road accident near his home.
Jason MacIntyre, a road and time trial cyclist, was in collision with a van on the A82 near Fort William in the Highlands, where he lived with his wife, Caroline, and eight-year-old twin daughters.
The crash happened in an area known as Carrs Corner. The 34-year-old was taken to Belford Hospital where he later died.
Figures in the cycling world have paid tribute to one of Scotland’s “finest cyclists”. Jackie Davidson, director of Scottish Cycling, the sport’s governing body, said: “We are very sad for Caroline and the two girls and our thoughts are with them. Jason was a rider with so much talent and potential. Everyone is shocked to hear the news.”
Jock Shaw, the president of Scottish Cycling, added: “We have lost one of our finest cyclists. Jason was a true champion who was always handicapped by geography. His achievements over the last few years proved that he was still improving and we were looking forward to him progressing further.”
MacIntyre broke Scots cyclist Graham Obree’s 10-mile time trial record last year. He began professional cycling at the age of 18 and went on to win the Tour of the North in Ireland at 23.
He took two years away from racing to help his wife following the premature birth of his daughters before going on to win 13 Scottish titles and three British championships.
MacIntyre was selected to represent Scotland in the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester and won the British 25-mile Time Trial twice and was also the first Scot to win the British Circuit race Time Trial Championship. He had been preparing for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
A statement on the Scottish Cycling website said: “Jason was a totally committed, dedicated rider who, despite his many successes was unassuming, modest and hugely popular with his peers.”
It added: “He was a member of the Scottish Cycling Talent Team and, but for his decision to train alone and continue to live in Fort William, would almost certainly have earned Great Britain selection.”
An investigation into the accident is being carried out by Northern Constabulary’s Road Policing Section. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Stewart Maxwell, the Scottish Sports Minister, also paid tribute to MacIntyre, saying: “Jason was one of our finest athletes who represented Scotland at the highest level on the international sporting stage, including the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
“His death robs Scottish sport of an incredible talent and I would like, on behalf of the Scottish Government, to pass our condolences to his wife and twin daughters.”

I attended the national tt championships in Holmes Chapel last year, in which Jason competed and was shocked that such an important road race was not completed on closed roads. One rider fell and slid across a main road he was lucky that at the time there were no cars travelling along the road. Why do we treat our senior cyclists in this way? How many professional footballers have to train or compete in such hostile environments?
My sympathies go to Jason's family

Sad to hear of yet another young talented rider to be mown down. Only 2 years since we lost Zak Carr and 10 years since Pete Longbottom in similar fashion. How much longer can motorist be exempt from a moral duty of care on our roads!
David , Lichfield,
Sympathy ,to Jason's wife and daughters ,
it is such a terrible loss to the family How much longer do we cyclists have to put up with drivers who don't give a damn because they are in their little tin boxes.
CLIVE PARTRIDGE, PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND
Such terrible news - again sympathies to the family
Is this yet another example of the discraceful attitude of British drivers towards cyclists?
Glenn, Devon,
really sad news.
sympathies to the family. i will say a prayer for you.
it is a shame britain is such a dangerous place. when are our politicians going to do something about this ?
