Alex Marshall again stamped his authority on a sport that he has dominated since 1992 when he defeated Ian Bond 10-2, 11-5 in the final of the WBT World Indoor Singles Championship at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea in Norfolk, yesterday. Watched by the legendary David Bryant, who won the event in 1979, 1980 and 1981 when it was played in Coatbridge, near Glasgow, the burly Scot, 40, proved himself a worthy successor to the man with the pipe.
Marshall rocketed to prominence in 1992, when he won the world outdoor pairs and fours titles in Worthing, and has held a world title of some kind — indoors or out — continuously for 16 years. Yesterday, he turned in a masterful performance to win the indoor title for the fifth time, having made the record his own last year, moving ahead of Bryant, Tony Allcock, Richard Corsie and Paul Foster, who have each won it three times.
Bond, of England, may have been suffering from a painful shoulder injury but that had not stopped him reaching the final with some delicate drawing. “Tattie” [Marshall] was awesome. He started both sets brilliantly, and never really let me in,” Bond said.
Aron Sherriff, of Australia, lost 21-10 to Safuan Said, of Malaysia, in the final of the World Outdoor Singles in Christchurch, New Zealand. Although the two flagship events were scheduled at the same time, most of the top players opted for Hopton-on Sea.
