Am I the only one who found it difficult to accept Shaun Edwards celebrating at the end of the England-Wales game? He is a passionate Englishman, so how could he enjoy beating them?
P Simon, Welwyn Garden City
The most galling picture after England’s defeat by Wales was of Shaun Edwards among the Welsh ranks. Rob Andrew should be ashamed he has allowed our best coach and motivator to work for the Welsh.
David Fare, via e-mail
England’s football team do not have an Englishman deemed to have sufficient ability to be manager so they appoint an Italian. England’s rugby union side had available one of the finest coaches in world rugby, Shaun Edwards, born and bred in Wigan, so he now assists Wales. There must be a logic to this but it escapes me.
Peter Bainbridge, St Helens
I am intrigued how Stephen Jones (last week) can refer to England lacking ‘experience and composure in their back three’ despite being a team of ‘vast experience’. Is the sum not equal to its parts?
B Saunders, Beckenham
In its coverage of Scotland-France, the BBC missed nine scrums, seven lineouts, a penalty, a conversion and a drop-out. Why?
P Mellor, Grimsby
When it was announced that Iain Balshaw would play full-back for England, I backed Wales at 4/1. Needless to say, he fulfilled expectations.
Roger Ray, Huddersfield
Harlequins provided seven of the England team that started the 1991 World Cup final against Australia – Will Carling, Simon Halliday, Jason Leonard, Brian Moore, Paul Ackford, Peter Winterbottom and Mickey Skinner.
Peter Forbes, King’s Lynn
The African Cup of Nations has restored my faith in football. Instead of the usual images of a starving, war-ravaged Africa, we have an exuberant celebration of the beautiful game that puts our dreary Premier League to shame.
Stan Labovitch, Windsor
David Beckham is a shining example of sportsmanship, and a role model for young players.
Jaqui Taugwalder-Hill, Antibes, France
I caddied for Bobby Charlton in a golf pro-am and he told me about his early matches at Wembley – he had problems hitting long-range shots over the bar but figured out the solution was to hit the ball further back in his stance.
James Shotton, via e-mail
Fans of Coventry’s Willie Carr will recall his so-called ‘donkey-kick’ free kick being banned as it was deemed to constitute a double-touch of the ball.
Alan Hallsworth, Waterlooville
Having watched the Busby Babes play, we often returned to Manchester on the same train as the players. I remember, when I was 13, walking down the platform sandwiched between Tommy Taylor and Dennis Violett.
J Davenport, Heywood, Lancs
