Ron Lewis in New York
Take a trip to New York and see the city from the air
If John Duddy gets his shot at Kelly Pavlik, the world middleweight champion, soon, he should thank two New York judges, or maybe he should blame them for putting him in danger.
Somehow Duddy, from Londonderry, won a majority points win over Walid Smichet, an unheralded Tunisian who boxes out of Canada, in the chief supporting contest at Madison Square Garden. It was supposed to be a straightforward warm-up bout for the unbeaten Duddy, but the Northern Irishman's lack of defence meant that he took heavy punches for most of the contest.
One judge, Frank Lombardi, scored it a draw, a verdict that was booed by the crowd, but John McKaie and Don Trella both scored it 98-92 for Duddy, meaning they believed that Smichet won only two rounds.
Bob Arum, Pavlik's promoter, had been planning to offer Duddy an attempt at the title in New York in June, although whether that is still viable despite the win remains to be seen.

First show some respect for the fighter and get his hometown right. Ireland's own is proudly from Derry.
I see this so called slip up against Smichet as every cloud has a silver lining. John and his team where maybe getting carried away with the hype surrounding a title fight with the ghost. Now Irish ropes and manny stewart know that john has work to do. But i must confess i had a little chuckly to myself, as to the way everyone is dismissing John as a contenter, bewear john has the passion, and heart of a warrior and wont stop, never takes a step back. Things lacked by more skilled fighers, but you can bet every cent you have john has what it takes to step though those ropes and challenge the ghost. And Kelly better be ready as theres fire in duddys eyes.
Ronan, Derry, Ireland
Although John was being hit by heavier hooks he scored continuously with his jab throughout the fight and was on target more than Smichet.
It was not a good performance by John he has shown little progress from the Campus fight and I do agree Pavlik would dismantle him and possibly hurt him badly.
I watched the fight in Sydney, Australia and cringed when I seen the amount of times he was getting hit with big shots at random, he is comfortable at fighting outside but once inside he is an unmissable target, no head movement or footwork
I just didn't understand why he want to stand toe to toe when he was coming off worse every time.
I doubt he is ready for a title shoot after that, it would be like putting a deer in a lions cage against a guy like Pavlik. We know money talks in boxing and I'm sure it will be a big pay day for him but I would like to see him fight 3 times with decent opposition before a Pavlik fight cause he could get hurt badly.

I had the opportunity to meet John Duddy last year before his St. Paddy's Day fight at MSG. A very likable young fighter. With that said, can we be realistic here. Putting him in against Pavlik is simply foolish. There is a big hype machine pushing Duddy here but the facts are that he gets hit far too easily by over the hill journeymen (See Bonsante, Campas, Smichet). Kelly Pavlik is at a whole different level. Duddy has heart and guts but his skill is nowhere close to Pavlik's. It would be a gross mismatch with Duddy possibly getting seriously hurt. The greedy promoters should be jailed for letting this debacle take place. DON'T LET THIS FIGHT HAPPEN!!!

I was at the fight. Duddy definitely got hit a lot in the earlier rounds with some impressive power punches but he outpointed Smichet every round after the fourth. The two judges had it right, Duddy stuck Smitchet with his jab all night. By the way, Ron Lewis, Duddy is from Derry, not Londonderry.
