Els breaks losing run as Donald falls short
Golf Ernie Els, of South Africa, won his first tournament on the US PGA Tour for nearly four years when he held off Luke Donald, of England, to win the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida last night. Els recorded a final round of 67, three under par, to finish on six under, one shot better than Donald (71). “It’s been a long time coming,” Els said.
Donald moved to within one shot with a birdie at the par-four 16th, then took aim at the flag on the par-three 17th, getting the ball to stop in the fringe after a daring shot over water. He failed to manage the birdie he needed there or at the par-five 18th.
Bayliss in control
Motorcycling Troy Bayliss, the home favourite, won both races at the World Superbike meeting in Phillip Island, Victoria, to establish a commanding lead at the top of the standings after two rounds. The Australian rider, on a Ducati Xerox, saw off the challenge of Troy Corser, his compatriot, in the first race and cantered home in the second when Corser crashed out after taking an early lead.
England washed out
Cricket England women's bid to wrap up the one-day series against New Zealand was frustrated when heavy rain stopped play in the penultimate match at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln University. The tourists, leading 2-1, now need to win the final game, at the same venue today, to ensure that they return home with the trophy.
Ochoa cruises home
Golf Lorena Ochoa, of Mexico, confirmed her status as the world No1 by winning the HSBC Women's Championship in Singapore after a final round of 68. In her first competitive event for three months, she posted a total of 268, 20 under par, to win by 11 shots from Annika Sorenstam. It was Ochoa's sixth win in her past ten events.
Osiris rule the river
Rowing Osiris Boat Club, from Oxford University, won the Women's Head of the River race on the Thames on Saturday in 19min 32.81sec, beating Oxford Brookes University by five seconds. Nottingham (fourth) were the first non-university club and Zurich's Belvoir Ruderclub (eleventh) the first overseas boat.
