A third convincing win and improved form against tougher opponents is just what Great Britain wanted ahead of today's clash against India in the Olympic qualifying tournament at the Prince of Wales Country Club. After overcoming spirited resistance from the hosts to triumph 4-1 the contest against India will provide Britain with their sternest test in the event.
Jason Lee, GB's head coach said the team struggled against Chile in the first half before delivering in the second.
"The match did us a favour because no-one could hide - all the players had to face up to it," he said. "This tournament is the most pressurised any player will experience. There is so much to lose and so much to gain."
Lee believes India play a very different style but both teams are of a similar standard. Britain have their sights set firmly on reaching Sunday's final in the winner-takes-all event and although defeat today may be a setback, it's crucial they get through to the final.
"It would be great to go in to the weekend full of confidence" said captain Ben Hawes. "We need to step up each game in a nice progression and then we'll have a good idea as to where we are. The game against Chile was ideal because that posed us our first real test."
Despite failing to convert any of the seven first half penalty corners they earned, Richard Mantell whipped in GB's opening goal in the 42nd minute from the set piece.
Defiant throughout the match and supported by a typically enthusiastic packed crowd banging drums, singing and letting off firecrackers, Chile were on level terms five minutes later.
However, Great Britain to their great credit, never wavered in their concentration or committment and their next three goals were of the highest quality. Rob Moore, Jonty Clarke and Simon Mantell combined to set up Barry Middleton who dived full length to touch in the second, and six minutes later GB made it 3-1.
Simon Mantell was involved in a superb exchange with James Tindall who flicked home and four minutes from time, Clarke and Middleton carved open the defence for Tindall to score his second.
India made the most of Mexico's lamentable defence thrashing them 18-1 but their forwards will have to work a lot harder today to prise open GB's defence. "We need to do well, but the key game is the final" added Hawes.
