Great Britain will send 35 swimmers to the Olympic Games in Beijing after an extraordinary seven days of trials in Sheffield during which one world, two European, eight Commonwealth and 24 British records fell.
In yesterday's concluding morning of finals, Hannah Miley, coached by her father, Patrick, in Aberdeenshire, backed up her European 400metres medley record from the heats, of 4min 33.24sec, with a 4:37.41 victory in a close battle with Keri-Anne Payne, on 4:38.40. Miley, 18, said that it had been tough to return to the fray the morning after her European record, but added: “I was hoping to go not far off my 4:33, but that was just such a standard - I still can't believe it.” Her time of 4:33.24 was inside the mark that had stood as a world record to the Olympic champion of 2000 and 2004, Yana Klochkova, of Ukraine, from September 2000 until April 2007.
In the 200metres freestyle, Rebecca Adlington overhauled the Commonwealth champion, Caitlin McClatchey, in the closing 25 metres to claim victory in 1:57.94, following her British-record time of 1:56.66 in the heats), with Jo Jackson and Melanie Marshall claiming the relay places. Miley, Adlington and the women's 4x200metres freestyle and 4x100metres medley relays offer some of the best medal hopes for Britain in the Beijing Games in August.
Michael Scott, the new Australian at the helm of performance in Britain, said: “There's a fantastic foundation for the future. But there is much more work to be done.”
