Zara Phillips may be better known as a rider but the Queen's granddaughter will showcase her other equestrian talents when a horse that she trained runs at Cheltenham.
Ms Phillips, whose triumph at the 2006 World Equestrian Games led to her being voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year, will saddle Manor Down, her first runner under rules as a trainer, in the Red Mills Intermediate Point-to-Point Championship Hunter Chase Final on Wednesday evening. The daughter of the Princess Royal missed seeing the ten-year-old, then an unfancied 20-1 shot, storm to victory at the Bicester Hunt with Whaddon Chase meeting in March, as she was competing at a three-day event in Portugal.
Dolly Maude, who represented Ms Phillips at the point-to-point race, said: “Hopefully, Zara will be there to see him because he is her first runner on the track and she's really looking forward to it.
“Manor Down has not performed well at Cheltenham in the past but he's got to try. Zara does absolutely everything with him. She rides him out every day and schools him - the whole lot is down to her. She's done a fantastic job because he is quirky, but she's made him really, really happy.”
A spokeswoman for Ms Phillips, who is competing in the Badminton International Horse Trials, said that she did not regard training as a future career and would continue to focus on eventing.
