Montgomery in dock over heroin charges

Athletics Tim Montgomery, the former 100 metres world record-holder, could face a jail sentence after he was charged with intent to distribute heroin.

The American, 33, was arrested in Norfolk, Virginia, and will appear in court on Monday. Montgomery, the former partner of Marion Jones, the disgraced sprinter who is serving a prison sentence for lying to investigators about using drugs, retired from athletics after he was given a two-year ban in December 2005 for doping offences. His mark of 9.78sec was deleted from the records books.

Garrido’s ‘best ever’

Golf Ignacio Garrido said it was “probably the best I’ve ever played” after a course-record 63 that included nine birdies in the second round of the Spanish Open in Seville yesterday. It gave the Spaniard a four-stroke lead over Martin Erlandsson, the first-round leader from Sweden. Colin Montgomerie just made the cut, his round of 73 leaving him one under par.

Nadal advances

Tennis Rafael Nadal beat Juan Ignacio Chela 6-4, 6-2 yesterday to advance to the semi-finals of the Sabadell Atlántico Open in Barcelona. Chela led 4-2 in the opening set before Nadal broke the Argentinian’s serve and took control of the match. David Ferrer, the No 2 seed from Spain, reached the last four with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Tommy Robredo.
