Horgan puts Irish in good heart for tour
Rugby union Ireland will leave for their tour to Australasia next month happy with the display in Gloucester last night of a XV without Munster representatives. An Ireland XV, led by Shane Horgan after the withdrawal of Brian O’Driscoll because of a bereavement, beat the Barbarians 39-14 at Kingsholm thanks to a positive approach in which Horgan scored two tries.
A try before half-time by Craig Newby, the New Zealand back-row forward who is joining Leicester next season, roused the Barbarians, but two more tries after the interval by Jamie Heaslip, the Leinster back-row forward, made sure of Ireland’s win. But for stout defence by the invitation team, Ireland might have hit the half-century.
Jersey cream of crop
Cricket Jersey, the hosts, qualified for Friday's semi-finals of the ICC World Cricket League fifth division by beating Botswana by seven wickets. They will play Nepal or the United States, with the winners progressing to the fourth division in the qualifying tournament for the 2011 World Cup. Afghanistan will probably have to beat Jersey today to reach the semi-finals after losing their last five wickets in 25 balls in a 69-run defeat by Singapore, who can still qualify.
Michelle Wie's Munich quest
Golf Michelle Wie plays in Munich this week, trying to rediscover the form that earned her worldwide fame and fortune. The 18-year-old, whose ranking has slipped to No172 from No3 two years ago, has accepted an invitation to the German Open, starting tomorrow, her first appearance in a full women's European Tour field. It is only her third event of the year. She missed the cut in her most recent outing and was last of the weekend qualifiers in the other.
“I just thought I needed to play in more tournaments,” she said. “I found at the last tournament I was really rusty. I've never been to Munich and it's a great opportunity.” Troubled by a wrist injury all last year, Wie added: “I feel a lot healthier and I want to start playing more and playing some good golf. My goal is just to have fun and keep my head on straight and shoot some low scores.”
It is the first Ladies European Tour stop in Germany for seven years. First prize is £30,000. Wie finished second, third and fourth in women's majors as an amateur and in her first three as a professional came third, fifth and third again, but then it all started to go badly wrong. At the age of 14 she missed the cut by only one in the US Tour's Sony Open in Hawaii, but other attempts to compete against the men, including one in Switzerland, saw her fail to repeat her early successes.
Barnett on target
Shooting Glyn Barnett, of the NRA touring team, won the Guernsey Can match after a tie-shoot with team-mate, Charles Dickenson. The NRA team also triumphed by eight points. Barnett's maximum 150 with 23 central bull's-eyes was the top score in the Jersey match, helping the team to a two-point victory. At the Bisley Phoenix Meeting, Keith Cox was the top individual. The United Kingdom Gallery Rifle team won the international match.
