Williams climbs off canvas for victory
Boxing Danny Williams, the British heavyweight champion, climbed off
the floor three times in the first four rounds to beat Konstantin Airich, a
previously unbeaten German, in a bizarre bout in Bilbao, Spain, last night.
Williams, who was also docked a point, knocked Airich down in the fifth and
was on top in the sixth – in which the bell ended the round 90 seconds early
– before Airich’s corner threw in the towel in the seventh.
Royals reach final
Cricket Shane Watson scored 52 runs in only 29 balls and took three
wickets as Rajasthan Royals reached the Indian Premier League final with a
crushing 105-run win over Delhi Daredevils in Bombay last night. Rajasthan
reached 192-9 before dismissing Delhi for 87.
Britain endure highs and lows on first day at Lucerne
Rowing Great Britain had a mixed opening day at the World Cup regatta
in Lucerne, Switzerland, with the men's coxless four, missing two
first-choice rowers, coming third in their heat and the women's quad
finishing second. There were wins for Alan Campbell in the single sculls,
Matt Wells and Steve Rowbotham in the double, the men's lightweight four and
Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase in the lightweight double.
Kiryienka wins stage
Cycling Vasil Kiryienka, of Belarus, won the nineteenth stage of the
Giro d'Italia, from Legnano to Monte Pora, after taking the lead on the
climb to the finish. Alberto Contador, from Spain, finished twelfth, 6min
21sec behind, but kept the overall lead.
Tough Olympic draw
Hockey Great Britain's women have been handed a tough draw in the
Beijing Games and will face Germany, the defending champions, as well as
Argentina, New Zealand, Japan and the United States. The men's squad take on
Pakistan, Holland, South Africa, Canada and Australia.
Dwain Chambers prepares for 100 metres return
Athletics Dwain Chambers is expected to contest his first 100 metres
for almost two years in Biberach, Germany, at the end of next month.
Chambers is determined to compete at the Olympic Games in Beijing this
summer and is planning a High Court challenge to a lifetime drugs ban
imposed by the British Olympic Association. The race in Germany would help
him to get race fit before the British trials in July.
