Shamed Pettigrew returns Sydney gold
Athletics Antonio Pettigrew will hand back the gold medal he won for the United States in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2000 Olympics after admitting to doping. During last month’s trial involving Trevor Graham, the former athletics coach, Pettigrew admitted using EPO and human growth hormone from 1997 to 2003. Pettigrew’s decision came a day after Michael Johnson, one of his relay teammates in Sydney, said that he would give his medal back in the wake of Pettigrew’s testimony.
Usain Bolt, the new 100 metres world-record holder, expects to run at the Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on July 25-26. Tyson Gay, the world champion, and Asafa Powell, the former record holder, have committed to the meeting. However, Bolt said that his coach may tell him to run only the 200 metres, which he prefers.
Sarwan stands tall
Cricket Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul produced a backs-to-the-wall performance yesterday to rescue a draw for West Indies in the second Test against Australia in Antigua. The pair added 143 runs in 53 overs for the fourth wicket before Sarwan was out for 128. The home side closed on 266 for five, chasing an unlikely 372 for victory. Chanderpaul, who scored 107 not out in the first innings, finished unbeaten on 77.
Lowes states his case
Rugby league James Lowes, the former Great Britain hooker, has declared his readiness to take over as Warrington Wolves coach permanently after Paul Cullen’s resignation last week. Lowes, Cullen’s former assistant, who is in temporary charge and is preparing the side for Sunday’s engage Super League match away to Harlequins, said: “You’d be daft not to want the position. I definitely feel I’m ready for it.”
