Sir Alex Ferguson said he would ruin a talented footballer’s career by keeping him in the stand (last week). This cannot be lawful. He is treating Cristiano Ronaldo as a commodity, not as a fellow human. Ronaldo is a credit to the Premier League but is probably best out of it given Ferguson’s disgraceful attitude.

Don’t all rush to the bookies to bet on Joe Lovejoy’s predictions for Euro 2008. On March 23, he predicted 39 matches remaining for the top five teams in the Premier League and had 17 correct.
John Griffiths, Pontypridd
Pat Cash is right to call time on the LTA’s latest failed experiment (last week). Despite being one of the richest sports in the UK, the complexity, cost and stupidity of the LTA system makes tennis more inaccessible than ever for children and their families. It favours children with parents and coaches smart enough to manipulate the ratings and rankings system.

By the quarter-finals of the French Open tennis championship, there wasn’t a player left in the men’s or women’s singles from an English-speaking nation. How times have changed since Australia and the USA dominated the game.
Gavin Pike, Conwy
I would appreciate it if all future articles written by Stephen Jones came with a disclaimer, as you keep publishing a plethora of his articles that have as much basis in fact as a Mills & Boon novel. For the record, the Super 14 final was played in a full stadium, the new laws have increased the importance of the scrum and the All Blacks are not really a bunch of evil Satan worshippers intent on taking over the world.
G Sellers, Chessington, Surrey
Munster fans still toasting their triumph in the European Cup final will doubtless be uncorking a bottle of plonk made from the sour grapes on offer from English club rugby’s most fawning acolyte, Stephen Jones. If his application for the position of Lawrence Dallaglio’s chief eunuch proves unsuccessful, he can always join the Munster throng next season.
Gordon Neill, Cranleigh, Surrey
Perhaps the fairest solution to the Max Mosley affair would be to ask an independent racing authority to adjudicate. Should the Jockey Club make a ruling, he might only get a five-day suspension for excessive use of the whip.

Hats off to Hugh McIlvanney (last week) for agreeing with Jack Nicklaus’s comments that a major win offers more prestige and bragging rights than a Ryder Cup win. The Ryder Cup fever among the European players is irritating. We had the ridiculous example two years ago of a big star on the European Tour saying on the eve of The Open that he hoped to have a good week to pick up plenty of Ryder Cup points.
