Andy Baddeley said yesterday that he has prepared himself for what would happen if his heart condition gives him a problem before an important race. The middle-distance runner is establishing himself as an Olympic dark horse after winning the Dream Mile at the Bislett Games in Oslo last Friday and will run the 3,000metres at the European Cup in Annecy, France, a week on Sunday.

The 25-year-old regards himself as a contender for the 1,500metres at the Olympic Games in Beijing in August and has developed breathing exercises to counter the palpitations, which can be brought on by anxiety and adrenalin, if they happen before a race. “I have considered that, but it's something I've got used to,” Baddeley, who has an accessory pathway in his heart, said.

Tom Lancashire is also rewarded for a brilliant night in Oslo and will wear the British vest for the first time in the 1,500metres at the two-day event in France, while Tyrone Edgar gets the 100metres spot, with Marlon Devonish going in the 200metres. Christine Ohuruogu, who runs her first 400metres race of the season in Ostrava in the Czech Republic this evening, is named in the 200metres.
