Briton could become latest to join the NBA
Basketball Pops Mensah-Bonsu, the Great Britain forward, has turned down a lucrative deal with Badalona, the Spanish side, after opening talks with four NBA clubs. The 6ft 9in Londoner, 24, was offered a £670,000, one-year contract after performing well in Italy with Benetton Treviso last season.
But he impressed the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA summer league in Las Vegas last week and has opened talks. Another London-born player, Kelenna Azubuike, will remain with the Golden State Warriors next season after they matched a contract offer from the LA Clippers.
Falcons lure Williams
Rugby union Newcastle Falcons have persuaded Danny Williams, the Leeds Rhinos and England wing, to switch codes. The 21-year-old is a product of the engage Super League club’s academy and made his debut for his country against France in 2007. Williams broke into the Rhinos first team at 19 and was a prolific tryscorer for the club before having a productive spell on loan with Castleford Tigers.
Historic day ahead
Bowls History will be made at Leamington Spa in Warwickshire today, when Suffolk, Hampshire, Yorkshire and Hertfordshire do battle for the women’s national inter-county title, staged for the first time by the sport’s new unified body, Bowls England. Hertfordshire are yet to win the Johns Trophy, while the other semi-finalists have won it only six times between them.
Jersey push big guns
Shooting Jersey rattled the opposition in the annual international Kolapore match in Bisley, Surrey, by equalling Great Britain and Canada at the first distance of 300 yards and then matching Britain’s total at 500 yards. Britain, though, finished seven points up after 600 yards, with Jersey third, equal on points with Canada, but with a lower total of central bull’s-eyes.
Froch takes on Pascal
Boxing Carl Froch has a new opponent as he challenges for the WBC super-middleweight title. Froch, 31, the unbeaten British champion, now faces Jean Pascal, of Canada, after Jermain Taylor opted to take on Jeff Lacy instead. The title was vacated by Joe Calzaghe, whose bout against Roy Jones Jr at light-heavyweight has been put back to November.
