Am I the only one who is fed up with Radio 5 Live’s constantly complaining Alan Green? His never-ending whinnying about referees is well enough known, but it seems he is unhappy about anything and everything nowadays - the weather, the food, the traffic, the public address system, the fans, the team shirts, the managers. Nothing is right. Even a trip to the Olympic Games didn’t cheer him up as he didn’t like the pronunciation of the word ‘Beijing’. Send him off.

It’s time the so-called Champions League was made into a proper league of 20 European teams, featuring the 10 richest clubs plus the next 10 most successful clubs in Europe, playing home and away throughout the season to find the real champions of Europe. That would enable four more clubs to enter the Premier League, with a more open competition and a beneficial knock-on effect throughout the four leagues. At the same time, the loan system should be subjected to a major overhaul or be scrapped. It is reasonable for a club to take a player on a limited-time loan to overcome a temporary player shortfall through illness or injury but the way it works just now, the wealthy clubs gobble up all the young talent and then loan them back to lower league clubs. They should be left in the academies or lower leagues. A salary cap at club level, similar to the one employed in rugby union, would also be a good leveller, but that’s too much to hope for.

The only drawback to the Manchester City takeover is the possibility that it will give more media coverage to the tiresome brothers who front The Beatles tribute band, Oasis. Already Noel Gallagher has been quoted as saying: ‘It’ll be nice to know that every gallon of petrol a Manchester United fan buys is going into our kitty.’ Although this line has been doing the rounds since Monday, no doubt it will be claimed as an Oasis original, a bit like their music.

Anybody who watched the rugby league Challenge Cup final will have seen a match played with discipline, in which nobody argued with the referee, and TV assisted the officials when close decisions had to be made - would that football had introduced the same rules, because it would have stopped all the bickering. Wake up Fifa and improve the game.
P Atkinson, Harpenden
Caught In Time (last week) referred to the rugby league Challenge Cup final as one of the highlights of the sporting calendar. I would agree with that. So how come last week’s final at Wembley only warranted the same number of column inches as the average Premier League or Championship game? The coverage was very disappointing.

Haven’t we heard enough about the 2012 London Olympic Games already? Can’t we leave it until, say, March 2012? No? Thought not.
