The future of Terry Edwards as Great Britain performance director remained unclear last night after UK Sport declined to release details of the deal it reached over the future of the national elite squad.
A meeting of the UK Sport board yesterday morning was expected to transfer responsibility for controlling the elite Britain programme from the ABA of England to BABA, an umbrella group for the ABAs of England, Scotland and Wales. The other option was to take the programme “in house” until a satisfactory group could be set up to run it.
“We had a good and positive discussion at the UK Sport board,” a statement said. “Agreement was reached on the immediate way forward for the sport. Details of this need to be finalised and communicated with the sport before any further announcement is made. We feel sure it will be the best solution to ensure continuation of success and maximise the potential for 2012.”
In Beijing, Britain, under Edwards, enjoyed their best Olympics since 1956, with a return of one gold and two bronze medals. The same tally was achieved by England at the World Championships in Chicago last year, easily the best performance by a home nation in the event’s history.
But behind the scenes things were chaotic, with rows and a string of unpaid bills. UK Sport, which distributes lottery cash, uncovered the problems, failing boxing’s governance and climate in a Mission 2012 report.
Edwards has expressed doubts about continuing to the London Olympics in 2012 if the new group is dominated by members of the ABA of England hierarchy.
- Willie Limond, the former Commonwealth lightweight champion from Glasgow who is best known for knocking down Amir Khan last year, has turned down the chance of facing Khan’s conqueror, Breidis Prescott, in order to fulfil a dream of boxing in New York. Limond, 29, will box Dmitriy Salita, an unbeaten Ukrainian, at Madison Square Garden, on November 8, on the undercard of the Joe Calzaghe-Roy Jones Jr bout.
