Terry Edwards, the coach who led Great Britain to its best Olympics in the ring in more than half a century, has refused to commit his future to London 2012 after the restructuring of the sport left him in the dark as to what his position will be.
Last week, UK Sport, which distributes lottery money to Olympic sports, handed the running of the elite GB performance programme to BABA, an umbrella group for the ABAs of England, Wales and Scotland. Previously it had come under the auspices of the ABA of England (ABA), but regular failings and behind-the-scenes rows culminated in blatant attempts by members of the ABA hierarchy to undermine Edwards in Beijing.
Britain won a gold and two bronze medals in Beijing, which is likely to lead to a substantial increase in funding for the programme before London 2012. But, should Edwards leave, several members of Britain's squad, including James DeGale, the Olympic middleweight champion, and Frankie Gavin, the world lightweight champion, have pledged to leave the amateur ranks to turn professional.
Edwards had seven hours of meetings at UK Sport on Friday but did not get the assurances he was looking for to be able to commit his future to 2012. “I haven't seen any of the detail, I don't even know what my job is,” Edwards said. “I put the last programme in place myself, I'm not putting my name to something when I don't even know what this programme will be.”
He also revealed that Derek Mapp, the new chairman of BABA, did not attend any of Friday's meetings and has not spoken to him since the decision was made to set up the new group. The only communication that Edwards has received from Mapp is a standard letter telling him his contract has been switched to BABA until March 2009, the end of the Beijing funding cycle.
Mapp, the former chairman of Sport England, was an ABA director before being offered his new role. Among the issues that Edwards is unsure of is whether there will be a performance director appointed over his head, or if the programme, based in Sheffield, will be regionalised.
“There have been a lot of rumours,” Edwards said. “The purpose of a lot of it seems to be to heal rifts. We are supposed to shake hands and put our nose back to the grindstone. But some of those wounds won't just go away.”
Jon Thaxton savours early night
Jon Thaxton won the vacant European lightweight title, but as good as ruined his chances of a big-money clash against Amir Khan soon. Thaxton, 34, produced the best punch of his 16-year career, a right hook, to knock out Juan Carlos Díaz Melero, of Spain, in the third round in Norwich on Saturday night. But after being knocked out in 54 seconds by Breidis Prescott last month, the last thing Khan will be looking for is a heavy puncher.
