Amir Khan will have to make his ring return without Freddie Roach, his new American trainer, in his corner. Khan turned to Roach, who has trained Mike Tyson and Oscar De La Hoya, after sacking Jorge Rubio in the wake of his 54-second defeat by Breidis Prescott in September. But Roach will be in the corner of Manny Pacquiao, the WBC lightweight champion, when he faces De La Hoya in Las Vegas on December 6, the same night Khan will be boxing against an opponent to be named at ExCeL, in East London.

Frank Warren, the promoter, attempted to get Khan a slot on the Las Vegas undercard, but negotiations failed. Khan, the Commonwealth lightweight champion, has worked with Roach at his Wild Card gym in Hollywood for the past fortnight, but will fly back to England two weeks before his bout. Dean Powell, Warren’s matchmaker who trained Khan when he beat Michael Gomez in June, will be in his corner for the bout.
