Attend an evening with Andre Agassi
Motor racing Max Mosley, the president of the FIA, hinted yesterday that he may stand for re-election for a further four years when his term as president expires in October. Mosley said that many FIA members had suggested to him that they want him to continue.
Asked if he was tempted to run again, Mosley said: “Yes. If a lot of people say to you, ‘You should stay,’ it’s churlish in a way not to. People have indicated they want to go on with the status quo and that is pretty widespread. That is nice and flattering, but I’ve got to ask myself if that’s what I really want to do.”
Hoy back on track
Cycling Sir Chris Hoy will compete for the first time since winning three gold medals at the Beijing Olympic Games when he joins a Great Britain team at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup event in Copenhagen next week. Britain will field 23 riders, with the Olympic stars backed up by hopefuls trying to cement their place in the squad before the World Championships in Pruszkow, Poland, next month.
Mitsubishi to pull out
Motor rallying Mitsubishi is to pull out of cross-country rallying, including the Dakar Rally, as part of cost-cutting measures caused by the global economic downturn. It is the latest Japanese carmaker to scale back its motor sport activities after Honda’s exit from Formula One in December. Mitsubishi have won the Dakar Rally 12 times, including seven in a row between 2001 and 2007.
On safe territory
Cricket Pakistan and Australia have agreed to play a five-match one-day series and a Twenty20 game in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in April and May, Ijaz Butt, the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, said yesterday. “Cricket Australia is still keen to come and play in Pakistan, but they have not got clearance from their government for security reasons,” Butt said.
Phelps wins praise
Swimming Fina, the sport’s governing body, praised Michael Phelps, the American who won eight gold medals at last year’s Olympics in Beijing, yesterday for issuing a public apology after being photographed inhaling from a marijuana pipe. “His sincere regret and the promise that such a situation will not happen again are sufficient guarantees that he will continue generating respect,” Fina said.
James hits the mark
Basketball LeBron James scored 33 points and became the youngest player in NBA history to reach 12,000 for his career as the Cleveland Cavaliers won their 23rd straight home game, 101-83, against the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night. At 24 years, 35 days, the Cavaliers forward was quicker than Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers guard, who was 25 years, 220 days when he reached the mark.
