Boxing A Great Britain amateur team completed a clean sweep of their three-week tour to the United States when they were 8-2 winners over a US team in Des Moines, Iowa. Six boxers finished the tour unbeaten — Khalid Yafai, Andrew Selby, Daniel Phillips, Iain Weaver, Steve Simmons and Amin Isa — after previous matches in Norfolk, Virginia, and St Louis, Missouri, which Britain won 5-3 and 7-4 respectively.
The two nations compete again on November 13 in London, when they box for the Atlantic Cup, which will feature a mixed men’s and women’s team for the first time.
Raiders end poor run
Basketball The Plymouth Raiders claimed their first points of the season yesterday when they secured a 96-95 overtime victory against Newcastle Eagles, the leaders and reigning champions. The Raiders, the BBL’s bottom club, won at the fifth attempt after their worst start to a top-flight campaign. The Eagles are joined by Milton Keynes Lions and Sheffield Sharks at the top of the table.
Yankees’ video gains
Baseball Alex Rodriguez helped the New York Yankees to a win in the World Series on Saturday after a video replay was used for the first time in Major League Baseball’s play-offs. It proved the slugger had hit a home run after the ball struck a television camera just above the right-field fence, but was initially ruled to be only a double. The Yankees led the best-of-seven series 2-1 going into last night’s game.
Turk clinches victory
Hockey Paul Turk spared Reading’s blushes when he converted a penalty stroke against Southgate to help the premier division leaders to win 5-4 in the shoot-out against the conference side, after the teams were level 1-1 at full time in the English Cup. Hitting back from a goal down, Shilen Tanna scored the equaliser for below-strength Reading, who booked their place in the fourth round.
Maher edged out
Equestrianism Ben Maher, the top-ranked British showjumper, took third place in the latest leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup in Lyons, France. Maher, riding Wonderboy III, collected €30,000 (about £27,000) after the top three were separated by only 0.55sec in a thrilling jump-off. Beat Mandli, of Switzerland, and Louis won the event in a time of 39.31sec, with Albert Zoer on Oki Doki second.
Anderson retains title
Bowls Stewart Anderson, 24, from Auchinleck, Ayrshire, retained the WIBC under-25 world indoor title in Portsmouth yesterday, defeating Brian Irvine, his fellow Scot, 12-2, 16-0. Kerry Packwood, 23, from Cwmbran, beat Michelle Cooper 6-5, 9-6 in the women’s final, regaining a title she won in 2006. Cliodhna Boyce, of Ireland, and Dan de la Mare, of Guernsey, won the mixed pairs title.
