Andy Baddeley, Britain's No 1 middle distance runner, won the 1,500 metres at the Telstra Melbourne Track Classic today.
Baddeley, who is currently warm-weather training in Australia, accelerated away to win ahead of Kenya's Bernard Kiptum at the Olympic Park venue. Last summer's World Championships finalist won in a time of three minutes 38.24 seconds with his rival clocking 3:39.41 seconds.
This latest success comes after an excellent start to the year where his versatility saw him claim victories in the Bupa Great Edinburgh International Cross Country 4 kilometre race and the New Balance Games indoor mile in New York.
Baddeley will remain at his training base for a few more weeks where for the second successive year he is training with Commonwealth 5,000 metre silver medallist Craig Mottram.
The first stop on this year's IAAF World Athletics Tour also saw Asafa Powell streak to a 100 metre victory in 10.04 seconds, a record for the meeting. Powell, ignoring a knee problem and deciding to run just 30 minutes before the start of the race, easily beat fellow Jamaican Michael Frater, who clocked 10.25 seconds.
Powell's performance into a slight headwind broke Maurice Greene's ten-year-old meeting record by two-hundredths of a second.
