Usain Bolt produced an astonishing run of 9.72 seconds to break the 100 metres world record in New York last night, in only his fifth race at the distance.
The 21-year-old Jamaican lowered the previous best, held by compatriot Asafa
Powell, by two one hundredths of a second at the Reebok Grand Prix meet at
the Icahn Stadium.
Bolt, who won the silver medal in World Championship 200m last year, beat
Tyson Gay into second place, although the American also ran a personal best
of 9.85secs.
In May, the 6ft 5ins sprinter had signalled his intent, by running 9.76secs, the second-fastest 100m time in history, in Kingston, Jamaica. But after the race Bolt admitted he hadn't gone out to break the record.
"I wasn't looking for a world record but it was there for the taking so I just went out there and ran my best race," he said. "I had an idea [the record was on] because I ran in Trinidad and I ran pretty bad and still ran 9.92, so I was pretty confident coming here."
In the week leading up to the race Bolt has suggested he would specialise in
the 200m in Beijing, but yesterday's performance has changed his mind.
"I think that would change now," Bolt said. "I'm definitely
doubling up."

what is all this rubbish about drugs?
the short of it is that he is just naturally an amazing runner
Emily, London,
it's really unbelieveable how many haters there are out there
Usain Bolt is a great and amazing athlete...he's got pure power and natural strength which can only be achieved by eating and training right...and of course that lovely Jamaican sunshine!!! USAIN BOLT TO THE WORLD!!!
Chardonnay, London, England
u all noe that he is not on drugs. We Jamaicans hav never ever taken drugs 2 compete in these events,if they do they r kicked off the team, point blank. u never hear of a jamaican athlete found doped up but all of a sudden we r takin drugs we hav been running well all these years
Trice, Mobay/NJ, Jamaica/USA
this guy is exceptional!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! imagine what will happen when he becomes seasoned in the 100m. ppl will say what they want but i can tell you all that the jamaicans who train and live in jamaica dont take dope in order to succeed. they would be too ashamed to go back home.
andrea, new york, u.s.a
Why knock us down if it were a white man who won this race then evryone would be giving him praise, but is it because he is a black man and blacks are suppose to be loosers, come on, you cant keep a good man down for long so all you player haters, give the man a chance if hes a cheat we will know
roxan hill, london , united kingdom
Yay he won lol he flogged every1 altho he could of smashed the record.
Mel Serisiers, Brisbane,
Is there a link online where you can watch this race? I can't find it anywhere...
Ash, Melbourne, Australia
Boo..hoo..hoo...
To all the nay sayers, doubters and haters...I say..GET USED TO IT!!. Usain and Asafa are just showing the world what JAMAICANS can, have always done and will continue to do especially when they remain here, train here with our JAMAICAN coaches and eat JAMAICAN foods.
Marcia, Kingston, Jamaica
sprinting is a very serious sport and Usain has done well to make us Jamaicns and other sprinters around the world proud also other world record holders had used drugs but time will tell the doubters that Asafa and Usain are pure strength , muscles and talent there is no drugs involved. BIG UP USAIN
ARLENE CLARKE, BULL BAY ST. ANDREW, JAMAICA
Both "Nicks" seem to have a hard time hiding their disdain for true athleticism. How about sticking to real ATHLETES gliding around on ice and beating each other into a state of stupor once in a while.
Johnny, NY, USA
Jamaicans take a very dim view of the use of perfornance-enhancing drugs. Just give him credit for a fantastic run and leave it at that unless you know otherwise.
Antoni, Roanoke, USA
Usain's performance is just one expression today of the Jamaican spirit of survival resulting in successful slave rebellion centuries ago - slaves had to run (pun intndd.) for their lives . Query natural selection? : - ). He's clean. Believe it! Our athletes have NEVER had to dope to do well.
Emile, Hampden, Jamaica
One way that records can be improved without drugs is for the athletes to be bigger... and this guy is BIG!
Arni, Brisbane, Australia
Fantastic time - if he can sustain that pace for 200 metres who is there who can beat him? Well done.
Ian, Bristol,
Gregg from Zurich - you're in a minority. So few people believe these days that the top sprinters are clean that the only solution is to allow any performance-enhancing substance the athletes wish to take, and let the chips fall where they may. Lewis, Johnson, Christie, Montgomery, Gatlin
Damian, Reading, UK
awesome run, speed= stride rate x stride length, this guy is very lean not all pumped up on steroids and growth hormone, i dont think the americans will be able to compete now against these two tall jamiacans looking like a one two for jamaica at olympics, udain 1 asafa 2, and gold in the relay in a
david, belfast,
The boy has been a big time sprinter for years, so to just come with "oh he must be doping, because he beat america's best" really is silly of you, they are tested for drugs every race and certainly will be at the olympics. Dont cry because your sprinters cant put up world class times without drugs.
Chad Feanny, Kingston, Jamaica
Are we to believe that he is running FASTER without performance enhancing drugs than the previous "record" holders who were up to their armpits in the banned substances !
sam, Lewisham,
Sprinting is about the human spirit, this is fantastic!!
Carol, London, England
Another Ben Johnson then?
I don't take sprinting seriously at all. It's been up to its eye balls in doping for over 20 years. May the best drugs win!
Simon , London, UK
we are supposed to believe this bloke is running clean .
If everyone was running clean it would be quite close at the finish , Bolt and another runner were way out in front .
It just doesn't add up .
It is laughable people in the sport still think this is genuine.
Flo Jo was clean , yeh right.
Nick Dixon, Sutton Coldfield, England
Nick, the answer to your question is 'yes'.
Gregg, Zurich,
Does anyone still take sprinting seriously these days?
Nick Mortimer, London,
