Win a fitness package worth more than £3,000

When Oscar Pistorius runs he resembles a creation from science fiction, but his story is more of a romance. At the Golden League meeting this evening, the South African, whose legs were amputated below the knees when he was 11 months old, continues his Olympics dream.
Pistorius, who was born with congenital absence of the filbula in both legs, has a long way to go. While most athletes were doing their winter training, the 21-year-old was meeting solicitors trying to overturn the IAAF’s decision to outlaw the carbon-fibre prosthetic limbs he wears when running. The ban was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in May and he recorded 47.78sec in his only race since - the Olympic qualifying time is 45.55. After tonight, he has one more chance and needs close to 46 seconds to have a chance of making the relay squad. “Being back on the track and in the gym feels like heaven,” he said.
Pistorius made his international debut against able-bodied athletes at this meeting 12 months ago, finishing second in a race against a field of Italian club runners. While tonight’s is also a B race, the competition will be tougher. “I expect the winning time to be similar in the B race to the A race,” Gigi D’Onofrio, the meeting organiser, said. The A race features Jeremy Wariner, the world champion, and LaShawn Merritt, who beat Wariner at the United States Olympic trials last week.
Whether or not Pistorius qualifies for the Olympics, he will be in Beijing for the Paralympics in September, competing in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres. “My dream is to go to the Olympics, but I have my whole career ahead of me,” he said. “If I don’t make it this time, I am very confident I will in 2012.”
- Paula Radcliffe has started running again as she continues her race against time to be fit for the Olympic Games. The marathon world record-holder is unlikely to make a decision on whether she will be ready for at least a fortnight, but training is progressing well in Font Romeu, southern France.
- Tim Benjamin, an Olympic relay finalist in 2004, misses the Games after sinus surgery, while Dean Macey, the decathlete, has his last chance to gain an Olympic qualifying total in Hexham, Northumberland, this weekend.
