Matthew Hatton recorded the best win of his career as he won nearly every round in claiming a unanimous points decision over Ben Tackie on the MGM Grand Garden Arena undercard on Saturday night.
A switch in trainers from Billy Graham to Lee Beard seems to have done wonders for Hatton, who looked woefully one-paced when losing to Craig Watson in a challenge for the Commonwealth welterweight title in May. But the younger Hatton, 27, has been transformed into a neat counter-puncher.
Tackie, 35, was a shadow of the man who lost on points in 2003 to Hatton’s brother, Ricky, the year after he had challenged Kostya Tszyu for the world light-welterweight title. Hatton said he hoped to get a shot at Kell Brook, the British welterweight champion.
“That was definitely my best win,” he said. “He had lost his last few fights but they were all in world class. I let myself down against Craig Watson, but I’m finishing the year on a high.
“Now I’m a totally different fighter. I spent years at Billy’s gym more or less training myself. I should have really left two or three years ago. Hopefully I will get a British title shot now, I deserve it.”
Ricky had been in his dressing-room with the bout on television but turned the screen off because he could not bear to watch.
Another winner on the card was Sirimongkol Singwancha, the former WBC super-featherweight champion from Thailand, whom Ricky Hatton has signed to his new promotional company. The boxer Hatton simply knows as “Ho” was a majority points winner over Rogelio Castaneda, of the United States.
