David Haye, the new WBA heavyweight champion, has had initial talks with
Wembley Stadium about staging one of the biggest fights in British boxing
history next summer.
Adam Booth, Haye's trainer and manager, reavealed today that representatives
of the national stadium have contacted him about a bout featuring Haye and
one of the Klitschko brothers. "Wembley have already been on to me,"
Booth said. "Haye against a Klitschko, Wladimir or Vitali, would be one
of the biggest fights in heavyweight history."
The British fighter defeated Nikolay Valuev in Nuremburg on Saturday night to become the third heavyweight world champion alongside Vitali Klitschko, the WBC champion, and Wladimir, his brother, the IBF and WBO belt-holder.
Haye, who suffered a suspected fractured right hand during the fight, faces a mandatory defence against the American-based Puerto Rican, John Ruiz, in the spring before he can begin negotiations about the unifying bout. “It [the Ruiz fight] will probably be in March or April,” Booth said. “We’ll let David’s hand settle down and also get all the alcohol out of his system.”
Greeted by hundreds of supporters at Stanstead Airport on his return from Germany, a buoyant Haye today claimed his points victory over the 7ft Russian “put boxing back on the map”. “I can’t believe all the attention the fight has received," he said. "I mean, when was the last time a heavyweight fight was on all the back pages? Years ago.
“My hand’s pretty bad. I hit him right on the chin and just felt it go. I knew then that the guy was for real. I had to be very sparing with my hand after that. In the last round, I hit him with a shot like he’d never been hit with before."
Haye conceded 9 inches in height and seven stone in weight to the deposed champion. “I’m 6ft 3in and I’m not used to being the smallest guy," the South Londoner said. "For the last few months, I’ve felt like a midget. It’ll be fun to fight someone the same size as me [Ruiz], but I’ll run through him. Nothing scares me now.”
Haye is similarly confident of defeating either of the Klitschkos. “I really feel I’m the best heavyweight on the planet,” he said. "The only way to prove it is to beat the best and that’s what I’m aiming to do.””
