Great Britain topped the medals table in the latest leg of the World Cup series at Medemblik, in the Netherlands, winning gold medals in the Finn, Laser and women's match-racing events, as well as two silvers and a bronze.
The battle for the Finn was particularly gripping, with Ed Wright pipping Giles Scott, his compatriot, to the title after the latter had led for almost the whole regatta. In the final medal race, Wright even had to recross the start-line after getting away before the gun, but he picked his way through the field to finish second and overhaul Scott, who came ninth in the last race, in the points.
“I was surprised because I started so badly, both today and the whole week,” Wright said. “I made it hard on myself. I got a couple of bad scores on the second day but have been slowly coming back.” Wright has now secured two gold and two silver medals in the World Cup series and has a healthy overall lead over Scott.
There is another all-British tangle in the Laser. Nick Thompson came sixth yesterday to maintain his overall lead, but Paul Goodison, the Olympic champion, has competed in only two World Cup regattas this year, winning both, and will try to wrest the lead off Thompson in the remaining two World Cups.
Lucy MacGregor, Annie Lush and Ali Martin won Britain's third gold in a close final of the match racing against the German boat helmed by Ulrike Schümann. This keelboat class will be a new event at the 2012 Olympic Games and MacGregor laid down a marker to claim her place as skipper with a 3-2 win.
There was also a silver medal for Megan Pascoe in the 2.4mR Paralympic class event and a bronze for Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes in the 49er, who claimed a podium place having been fifth at the start of the day.
While Wright and Scott were showing the strength in depth in British Finn racing, Ben Ainslie, the past master in the class, was having his own success in the Germany leg of the World Match Racing Tour. In stiff winds of 20 knots or more, Ainslie, representing Team Origin, had a tough quarter-final battle on Saturday against Ian Williams, another Briton.
They each won three races, with Ainslie disqualified from one after Iain Percy, his crew-mate, fell overboard during a spectacular wipeout as the wind gusted suddenly, but Williams was docked three quarters of a point for causing damage in a collision in the first race, which proved the difference. “The weather was certainly warm enough for a swim,” Ainslie said of Percy's sudden disembarkment.
In yesterday's semi-final, Ainslie beat Peter Gilmour, the Australian who represents Alinghi, 3-2 and will race Mathieu Richard, of France, in the final today.
