Team Origin remain unbeaten in the Louis Vuitton Trophy after winning two races yesterday. The British America’s Cup entry beat Pages Jaunes, from France, and All4One, a Franco-German team, off Nice, France.
Ben Ainslie’s crew were grateful for medium winds after racing had been cancelled because of calm conditions on the previous two days. They trailed Pages Jaunes up the first leg, but harried them with a series of tight tacks and had pulled ahead by the first mark on their way to a win by 30 seconds.
In the second race, Team Origin were more dominant in the pre-start. They led All4One by two lengths as they crossed the start line and stayed calm as their rivals attacked after the first mark to win by 14 seconds.
With three wins out of three, Team Origin are in second place, one win behind Emirates Team New Zealand, who are also unbeaten in the eight-team regatta.
The crews in the Transat Jacques Vabre are bracing themselves for strong winds and high seas today as they enter a big depression in the Atlantic. Brian Thompson and Dee Caffari, on Aviva, are the leading British entry in fifth place. They had pushed to within a mile of the leaders yesterday, but slipped back a little. “It is going to be very tricky over the next few days,” Thompson said. “It may not be about strategy but about keeping ourselves and the boat together.”
