The Boston Red Sox ended the Colorado Rockies’ streak of ten consecutive wins with a 13-1 victory at Fenway Park in the first game of the World Series on Wednesday night. The home side recorded the most runs in a World Series opening match in support of Josh Beckett, the starting pitcher, who gave up only six hits in seven innings.
Beckett struck out nine hitters, while Jeff Francis, his Colorado counterpart, lasted only four innings, giving up six runs. “I thought you saw a real good Beckett and our inability to shut down anyone,” Clint Hurdle, the Colorado manager, said. “We’re a no-excuse ball club. We got outplayed.”
Dustin Pedroia led off the first inning with a home run to begin Boston’s scoring spree, which included a seven-run fifth inning.
The second game was played in the early hours of this morning before the teams travel to Denver for games three, four and five (if needed) in the best-of-seven series.
