Cam Cameron has been sacked by the Miami Dolphins after the team's dismal season in which they won only one game out of sixteen.
Cameron and all but two members of his coaching staff have been released. The two coaches who have been retained are Steve Hoffman, the assistant special teams coach, and George Edwards, the linebackers coach.
The decision to dismiss Cameron comes after the Dolphins changed their management team installing Bill Parcells, the former Dallas Cowboys head coach, as executive vice president of football operations and Jeff Ireland, the former Dallas Cowboys vice president of college and pro scouting, as their general manager.
“This is a difficult decision, and I want to thank Cam and the rest of his staff for their work this past season,” Ireland said. “By making this decision now, it gives all of the coaches the greatest chance to pursue other opportunities.”
The early front-runner to replace Cameron is Tony Sparano, the Cowboys assistant head coach. Sparano is scheduled to interview for the Atlanta Falcons head-coaching vacancy on Friday.
Cameron signed a four-year contract in January 2007. Wayne Huizenga, the Miami owner, hired him over at least 12 other candidates after a two-week coaching search, the most extensive since the franchise's first season in 1966.
Cameron spent five seasons as the San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator before joining Miami. He was also the Washington Redskins quarterbacks coach from 1994-96.
Miami, who played a regular season game against the New York Giants at Wembley Stadium in October, were 0-13 when they defeated the Baltimore Ravens in overtime for their sole victory. Miami has missed the play-offs for six consecutive seasons, a franchise record.
