Take a trip to New York and see the city from the air
Climbers on Everest have been virtually cut off from the outside world after the Nepalese Army confiscated their laptops, cameras and satellite phones to prevent protests against Chinese rule in Tibet while the Olympic torch is carried to the summit.
The mountaineers, including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the British adventurer, are forbidden from staying higher than Camp 2 until May 10, when the torch is expected to reach the top of the world’s highest peak.
Nepal imposed the restrictions under pressure from China, which has closed its side of Everest to prevent protests during the torch’s ascent.
Climbers on the Nepalese side can use radios to communicate with each other, although their conversations are monitored by military “liaison officers” assigned to each expedition.
They can ask for permission to use their satellite phones, but must speak in front of the officers.
The only other way to communicate with loved ones, sponsors or fans is by sending runners with handwritten messages to Gorak Shep, the nearest village below base camp, where the rules do not apply.
“It’s back to the days of Hillary and Tenzing,” one expedition organiser told The Times from Kathmandu, asking not to be identified.
The regulations are irksome for climbers with corporate sponsors, who usually demand daily blog updates, or for those trying to raise money for a cause. Sir Ranulph is raising £3 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
“Mountaineering is always risky but it is usually events such as avalanche or bad weather that can hamper an expedition,” he wrote in his last blog on April 15. “This year, unexpectedly, the challenge has come from China.”

Mike, Nottingham
Dear Mike and others, I think you just don't understand what the 2008 Beijing Olympics Game means to the vast majority of 1.4BILLION Chinese ordinary people and what the Olympic touch means to the vast majority population all over the world who love peace and who love the sport!
The riot and the unfair media coverage are only a tiny dent in the vast human history. Chinese people are able to host the Game successful because they are so proud of it! They will never let any people who want to demage the Game and who want to make riot to China succeed because they treat this bettle with their pride and glory!
If, as Mike suggested, there will be shame mark the 2008 Beijing Olympics Game to be rememered, that will be the shame what the trouble makers have done to the Chinese people, the shame that the medias in West who have produced such seriors of so one side stories, the shame whom have no respect on the Chinese people!!
James, London,
It is the time when bring forth our patriotic!

When the world sees the torch farce being carried through Tibet the main emotion will be one of shame.
China may get its Olympics but the main reason it will be remembered is because of the Tibet protests
Congratulations Beijing
Mike, Nottingham, England
If the West has not done what it did in trying to disrupt China's progress using the Olympic Games as the staging point, then these mountaineers would not have to face these obstacles.
Anyway why are all these western mountaineers doing in this part of the world? Don't they have the Alps, Matterhorn, etc. in Europe and the Americas?
If true, Sir Ranulp fund raising for Marie Curie Cancer Caire is a good cause. But what about some of the others? Raising funds for Free Tibet Movement? Spying? Infiltration? All these interests in the Himalayas are grounds for suspicion.
Bear in mind, Nepal is a sovereign nation. Landlocked and not strong does not mean it can be pressured. Nepal probably know of some of the activities going on in these mountains and has taken steps to prevent any untoward incident during the Torch run up the mountain. Yes, maybe at the request of China
Thank you Nepal. You are doing the right thing for ASIA & CHINA. 1 world 1 dream.
