Yogi Breisner, the manager of the Great Britain three-day event team, is setting his sights high for the Olympic Games in China this summer. “My medal target is to come back from Hong Kong with team gold and individual gold, silver and bronze,” he said yesterday in Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire, where the team are training.
No team has achieved this in the 96 years that the Olympic three-day event has existed, but Breisner's dream - fuelled by the team silver and individual gold won at the Athens Games in 2004 - reflects the confidence he has in his team of five, headed by Zara Phillips and Toytown, the world champions. “We have a fantastic team and we have a great chance,” he said. “My main fear is that someone makes a silly mistake - it can happen so easily as Lewis Hamilton showed in Montreal.”
Phillips, one of the favourites for individual gold, remained guarded yesterday about her chances. “I'm looking forward to it but it's still a long way off and we've got to get there first” she said. Having missed the last Olympic Games when Toytown, now 15, succumbed to a leg injury she is reluctant to tempt fate.
While Phillips, Lucy Wiegersma and Sharon Hunt are all making their Olympic debuts Mary King and William Fox-Pitt are competing in their fifth and third Olympic Games respectively.
The latter is the only rider named with three horses - Tamarillo, Ballincoola and Parkmore Ed, all of which are working well in training. “My preference is for Tamarillo but the selectors may think otherwise” he said. Tamarillo, a part-Arab, and winner of Badminton in 2004, would be best suited to the heat and is a brilliant performer but showed at the 2006 World Championships that he is capable of one of the “silly mistakes” Breisner fears.
Although the climate in Hong Kong is a concern Breisner is confident that the horses will have the best possible preparation. “We learnt a lot from taking horses out to the test event last summer” he said. One of those lessons is that horses need to be “competition hardened” for Hong Kong. As a result all the team horses and the reserve horses are expected to compete at three events next month - Salperton (21-22 June) Barbary Castle (4-6 July) and Aston-le-Walls (18-20 July) after which (26 July) they go into quarantine for a week at Stow-on-the-Wold before flying out to Hong Kong from Stansted on 30 July.
