Dwain Chambers has set his sights on achieving the Olympic 100metres “A” qualifying standard at the EnBW Weltklasse international meeting in Biberach, Germany, today as his solicitors prepare for their legal action to try to overturn a British Olympic Association lifetime ban that prevents former drug cheats from competing in the Olympic Games.
The 30-year-old sprinter would probably have achieved the required time of 10.21sec a fortnight ago in Crystal Palace, but a strong headwind spoilt his attempt. His time of 10.24 into a wind of 1.8metres per second was probably worth 10.10, according to statisticians at the meeting.
Now Chambers has gone to southern Germany in his quest for the qualifying time. “I'm very confident about what shape I'm in and it's just a matter of putting the right race together in the right place at the right time,” he said.
Chambers won a silver medal in the 60metres at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia in March before failing in his attempt to start a career in rugby league with Castleford Tigers because of his lack of experience. “My training's improved for the sheer fact that I've obtained a lot of fitness from the rugby and it's paying dividends now,” he said.
Chambers has distanced himself from the legal proceedings his lawyers are preparing. “That's not my field,” he said. “I'm confident what I can do on the track and they're confident they can do what is necessary off it.”
Chambers, who will also compete over 200metres in Biberach, faces mostly German opposition in the shorter sprint, although Ernest Wiggins - who is surprisingly foregoing the United States Olympic trials, which started yesterday - will also be in the field.
