A deal with Beijing has allowed the Chinese authorities to block sensitive internet sites, the International Olympic Committee has disclosed.
Journalists at the main media centre in Beijing found that the BBC Chinese language site was inaccessible, as were the websites of human rights organisations such as Amnesty International and Reporters without Borders — whose welcome page at present shows the five Olympic rings replaced with interlocking handcuffs. The US broadcaster Radio Free Asia and the German radio station Deutsche Welle are also out of bounds.
Kevan Gosper, the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) press commission, confirmed that some of its officials had agreed to Chinese demands that some sensitive sites be blocked on the ground that they were not related to the Olympics.
“I regret that it now appears Bocog [the Beijing Organising Committee] has announced there will be limitations on website access during Games time.” While the censors have allowed access to the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, attempts to read entries about the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre were unsuccessful. Computers at the main press centre displayed the message: “Impossible to display the page.”
Giselle Davies, of the IOC, said that officials had been told repeatedly by Beijing organisers that some sites would be unavailable to the 20,000 reporters covering the games. “We’re working with them to ensure the media face the minimum possible restrictions.”
Chinese organisers said that the censorship would not hamper journalists in their job of reporting on the Games. Sun Weide, a Bocog official, said that the plan had always been to provide “sufficient” internet access for foreign reporters. Sites run by the Falun Gong religious sect remain inaccessible, as do most sites with the word Tibet in their internet address.
The revelation that China’s censors had never considered relaxing internet curbs further tarnishes the image of the Games amid persistent fears of pollution and security so tight that cafés are not allowed to place tables on pavements and hotels cannot change their brand of shower gel without checks.
China is clearly determined not to allow any disruption to the August 8-24 Games, and has announced a sweeping security operation in Lhasa to prevent anti-Chinese unrest. Security in the Tibetan capital has been tight, with paramilitary People’s Armed Police patrolling the streets, since a deadly riot on March 14 when Tibetans rampaged through the town setting fire to shops and attacking ethnic Han Chinese.
Officials refuted a report that two monks had been killed in a clash this month with police in a monastery in a Tibetan area of western China. They said that the men had died when a room in which they were having lunch collapsed as 50 kilograms (110 pounds)of an unidentified black powder exploded, ignited by faulty electrics.

Lim in Malaysia.
The CCP China Government does not do such a fine job as your biased imagination. You largely do not know what you are talking about. As a Malaysian, will you be the first to cheer in the Chinese troops when they invade? If so. Your opinions and actions may well amount to treason
Boris, Belgravia, London
I can't say I recognise the China so often portrayed in the Western media. Lived here 4 years now, married + kid.
Tibet / China have been at it longer than the Christians and Muslims. Dali Lama - operated a system of serf's - slavery in any other language. Not such a man of peace afterall eh.
Andy, Yantai, China
David, Cannes, France -- "Shame!!"
i completely agree. if france or the US did that we'd be universially denounced by every head of state. why is china any differnet? why are our leaders silent?
tyler, seattle, united states
I do not think that I have a great deal of respect for the British government when it, too, participates in censorship. The British government has censored alternative news websites based in America. Infowars.com, truthnews.us, prisonplanet.com, and thinkprogress.org have been censored.
Jennifer, Granbury, TX, U.S.A.
Few amusements rival watching drugged up money grabbing performers and their self-agrandising organisers talking about the morally enhancing nature of sport in a country where hundreds are executed annually and where heavy censorship, enforced by a brutal regime, is condoned by the IOC.
peter, London, UK
we know very well why the above-mentioned anti-China sites have been blocked in China, and we support the regulation by the government. We also get to know who have funded those anti-China sites, and their untold motives for sponsoring them. these issues are closely related to national security
Mkgenie, Beijing, China
All this noise about staging an amateur sporting event with a few athletes. Got a bit out of hand over the years really. Almost bankrupted Greece. We in the uk are squandering a quarter of the amount we are begging from the french to build our neuclear power stations on our olympic party for a few.
kenny livitt, hove,
is anybody actually planning to tune into the olympics? im not
RS, Manchester, UK
One wonders why the free flow of information is so frightening to Chinese officials that they even feel the need to censor foreign reporters who will be relaying reports to people outside of China's borders on outlets that would be unreachable for the people actually living in China.
Jason, Chicago, United States
Peter,
Since when did the values of liberalism and the enlightenment become conflated with specific regions and nations? I'm sure tyrants really appreciate the tolerance you show for their activities (cultural relativism = ultimate fail).
Jason, Chicago, United States
Dr. Wang, I see you sit in comfortable Mayfair, how come? I see you have to mention Mayfair, London not good enough? The majority of Chinese are NOT happy, what rubbish, clearly you have never gone to the Provinces, spoken to the people and heard what they think. Get out of Mayfair and go and see for yourself.
LLoyd, Just London,
I will be blocking the Olympic Games completely. It won't be on my laptop, desktop or TV. Nothing against the Chinese, I just find the whole thing utterly dull.
clivex, Bristol, England
It funny how westerners are trying hard to make China become 'western' regardless of the difference in cultures, customs, regulations and so on..... hahahahaha
peter, melbourne, australia
If BBC reporters are unable to get to the BBC website, how will their task of reporting not be affected? And why the BBC?
Rob, Singapore,
If only the western journalists could have their way.
Chinese people should have a chance to see the west as what they really are.
Chinese people are still too naive.
It would serve to galvanise chinese population against the west.
Hung, kuala lumpur,
Without Free Tibet websites, how those "Olympic reporters" will turn China upside down as planned?
The story is not about OG or Chinese protest against their gov't, which majority Chinese are happy with. The farce will be the West's protest against Chinese gov't via its political "OG reporters".
Dr. Wang, Mayfair, London, UK
Nobody comes out of this looking good, what on earth possessed the IOC to give the games to China in the first place and if China thinks hosting the games will give it any kudos then she's wrong, all its done is shine the worlds spotlight on her more unpleasant aspects.
Mike, Nottm, UK
The Chinese govt knew all along that they wouldn't have to comply with any 'commitments'. When it gets so close to the start of the Games, what's the IOC going to do - cancel the whole event? With such onerous commitments, there should have been closer monitoring, and an alternative location picked
Jim, Blackpool, UK
David of Keighley
The BBC have never asked me or the TV licence paying public if I want them to show last of the summer wine all the time, but they still carry on showing this abominable show
Derek Pearce, south shields, tyne and wear
Hi,
I'm sorry if I'm missing something here but I thought the west sent reporters here to report on the olympics, obviously wrong. No, let's send a lot of reporters to see how much trouble they can make. Why do they need to go to these not atheletics sites. Just to please the west?
Tony Corbett, Tangshan, China
David Lea-Smith, Edinburgh, U.K.
Why are you westerners so concerned about China and its CCP govt.? It is the only Government China has and it is doing a fine job, maybe too fine that you find it hard to digest,eh? The Western educated Chinese will return to carry on with the fine job. OK!
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
The Chinese censor the internet and free speach which is against UN law.
One way they do this is via the Golden Shield Project aka. The Great Firewall Of China.
They blocked BBC TV news channel in China during Tibetans monk protests and also blocked/gagged local news from reporting on it.
Andrew Towell, Hartlepool, England, UK
The only way to effectively protest about the conditions in China is for the publicly funded BBC, politicians and the chosen athletic representatives of Great Britain not to attend theses games. The television licence paying public have never been asked by the BBC if I want them to cover the games, nor have the people been consulted about our politicians attending the opening ceremony. The athletes, who seem not to be concerned about the political censorship and oppression in China, should all withdraw from the games. As for the sponsors, need I say more? ,
David, Keighley, England
Why is anyone suprised. The Chinese government isn't a legitimate one voted in by its people. Therefore it is terrrified of any criticism which might undermine its authority. Our hope is that western educated Chinese will one day reform China and its people will get the freedom they deserve.
David Lea-Smith, Edinburgh, U.K.
Who ever believed that the IOC - an organisation without ethics, morality or integrity (and that's just on past record) would care a fig about human rights and free speech. Gosper is like most of our present days 'leaders' - in bed with the Chinese and unable to lie straight in that same bed.
russell vance, canberra, australia
Oh, so you're finally admitting that ethnic Chinese were attacked by Tibetans first, and not quite the "government crackdown on peaceful protests" your previous articles seem to imply.
Howard, Manchester,
"some IOC officials had agreed" - which officials? - the IOC should totally dissociate and sack them!! Again China gets away with anti-human rights, and censorship - totally contrary to the contracts and agreements they committed to as part of their awarding of the Olympics.
Shame!!
David, Cannes, France
