ARCHERY
Larry Godfrey, fourth in Athens and in the team again this year, was once
described as ‘the Kevin Pietersen of the sport’ but the best prospect is
Alan Willis, who won bronze in the World Cup grand final last year. Look out
also for 21-year-old Charlotte Burgess
BADMINTON
Once more the mixed doubles pairing of Gail Emms, right, and Nathan Robertson
will carry the nation’s hopes. The silver medallists and stars of Athens
will again encounter stiff opposition from the Chinese, particularly as they
have been drawn against the No 2 seeds in the first round. Emms, however, is
looking on the bright side: ‘The expectations are on them, as it will be
their first match in their home Olympics, so in a way, we’ve got it good’
BOXING
After the heroics of 17-year-old Amir Khan picking up silver at the last
Games, the latest star is Frankie Gavin. The lightweight southpaw of Irish
extraction became English boxing’s first world amateur champion when he
knocked out Italian Domenico Valentino last year and can push for a medal
CANOEING
Tim Brabants has an Olympic bronze from Sydney but will hope to improve on
that now he is world and European champion in the K1 1,000m event
DIVING
Few Britons at Beijing have enjoyed such a momentous year as Plymouth’s Tom
Daley, right. Unheard of a few months ago, Daley is now one of the most
recognisable faces in the British team after becoming the country’s
second-youngest Olympian. The 14-year-old and partner Blake Aldridge won
bronze in the 10m synchro dive in the World Cup in February, so it’s not
overdoing the hype to say he has a genuine chance of a medal in Beijing
GYMNASTICS
Beth Tweddle’s hopes of glory took a blow on Friday when a rib injury forced
her to withdraw from the beam and vault competitions, but the 2006 world
champion is optimistic about competing in the floor and bar events in an
attempt to win a medal at her last Olympics
JUDO
After winning the men’s World Cup 60kg title last year, Craig Fallon is
desperate to make amends for his performance at Athens in 2004, when he lost
his second-round bout with just four seconds to go, having had the better of
his opponent for most of the battle
ROWING
Britain’s dominance of this sport may not be as pronounced as in recent Games,
but there are still grounds to expect a reasonable return. The women’s
quadruple sculls, led by two-time silver medallist Katherine Grainger, will
be chasing gold. The men’s coxless four of Peter Reed, Tom James, Steve
Williams and Andy Triggs-Hodge hope to put behind them the disappointment of
the World Cup, where they failed to reach the final, and will try to record
Britain’s third straight gold in this event. The men’s eight will be
disappointed if they don’t come home with a medal after winning this year’s
World Cup, while Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter start as favourites in the
lightweight sculls
SHOOTING
Another area where historically Britain has enjoyed success - remember Malcolm
Cooper at Los Angeles in 1984. Leading the way will be 2000 double trap
champion Richard Faulds, in his fourth Olympics. Faulds disappointed in
Athens but confirmed his return to form by equalling the world record in
June to win the World Cup
TENNIS
Not for the first time, a nation will be pinning its hopes on Andy Murray,
whose run of good form at Wimbledon and in North America in recent weeks
must give him confidence. And at least Murray will have his brother to share
the burden of expectation. Jamie Murray, a proven performer in doubles
competition, will be lining up alongside Andy in the team format. Dare we
dream? Yes, we dare
TRIATHLON
It’s been some two years for Tim Don, son of the football referee Philip.
Crowned world champion in September 2006, he then had to serve a three-month
ban for missing three out-of-competition drugs tests. A successful appeal
ensured this did not mean, as was originally thought, that he would miss out
on Olympic selection, and he marked his return to competition by winning the
London triathlon last year
