1700 BST The first proper day of competition in Beijing draws to an end. It has been eventful, despite it being the day with the lowest number of golds decided (seven). In day two, from a British point of view, there will be interest in the women's team archery, women's road race in cycling and the women's hockey team take on Germany. But there will be a lot more taking place and we will cover it here.
1650 BST France have given more information about the withdrawal of Nicolas Touzaint's horse, Galan de Sauvagere, in the equestrianism, which has blown wide open the competition. Touzaint, 28, and his horse withdrew minutes before they were due into the arena in Hong Kong because the horse was lame, Thierry Touzaint, the team trainer and Nicolas's uncle, said. The team had already suffered the loss of 2002 world champion Jean Teulere, who pulled out on Thursday because of an injury to his horse Espoir de la Mare. Galan de Sauvagere injured itself after taking fright during a thunderstorm on Friday, Touzaint said, the horse falling in his stable and injuring his right hind leg. "This is really a nightmare. We came with great expectations, fabulous horses in great shape," said Thierry Touzaint. "We need time to understand the situation. Tomorrow [Sunday] we will do our best, but now we lack a leader. We hope to finish in the best possible conditions." The way now appears open for Australia's three-day eventing team to prove its gold medal mettle, with husband-and-wife duo Lucinda and Clayton Fredericks having completed impressive tests in the first dressage competitions.
1645 BST Further news of the Samoan boxer who was stretchered out of the boxing arena following his light-heavweight bout. Farani Tavui was taken to hospital and had regained consciousness by the time he was put on board the ambulance, Charles Butler, head of the International Amateur Boxing Association's medical commission, said. Butler added that Tavui was undergoing "routine" tests to ensure he did not suffer internal bleeding to the brain from the impact of the punches that could have been aggravated after he collapsed and his head hit the canvas. "I cannot take the risk about this second impact syndrome," Butler told reporters. "I feel very confident that this young man will be okay," Butler added, which is good news.
1625 BST This being the Olympics, there is inevitably some politics, aside from the protests in China. It has emerged that Georgia may pull out of the Games because of the conflict that is taking place with Russian troops in South Ossetia. Georgia has a team of 35 athletes in Beijing. “We don’t know what will happen but we’re talking about it now. It will be the decision of the president of the country [Mikheil Saakashvili],” Giorgi Tchanishvili, a spokesman for the Georgian Olympic Association told the Reuters news agency.
1600 BST Daniel Keatings has better news regarding the all-round final because he has qualified for that, after just missing out on the pommel horse final. But only just, he finished in 24th place, the lowest spot for qualification.
1528 BST Further news on the Samoan boxer Farani Tavui who was taken out of the arena on a stretcher after being knocked out in the third round of his light-heavyweight bout with Marijo Sivolija-Jelica, of Croatia. The China state news agency Xinhua says Tavui had been taken to the Chaoyang Hospital in eastern Beijing. But it has yet to give any information on his condition. Sivolija-Jelica was not happy to see his opponent leave the arena in such a fashion. “I don’t enjoy such injuries, because it can always happen to me,” Sivolija-Jelica said. “I am not cruel. I am an emotional boxer. I’m not pleased.” Tavui was Samoa's only boxing representative.
1525 BST The eight qualifying nations for the men's team gymnastics are China, Japan, Russia, Korea, Germany, USA, France and Romania.
1510 BST In the men's gymnastics, China are leading the men's team event in the qualifying for the final round after six events, while Yang Wei of the host nation is also in the lead in the individual mixed discipline. Louis Smith has qualified for the pommel horse final (the first time ever by a Briton) with the fifth-highest score, but heartbreak for Dan Keatings of Britain. His score is joint eighth, but because only the top eight qualify but he just misses out as only the top eight qualify and those with the same score go ahead of him because of a higher team score.
1455 BST Elsewhere in women's soccer (or football), China, after an opening win, could only draw 1-1 with Canada. A win for either team would have put them in charge of group E.
1445 BST News from the women's soccer, where Brazil, one of the favourites, have defeated North Korea 2-1. Goals came from Marta and Daniela for Brazil with Ri Kum Suk scoring for North Korea in injury time. The win puts Brazil at the top of group F and in good position to advance to the quarter finals.
1441 BST Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson have been talking about their aim to go one better than Athens four years ago in the badminton mixed pairs and get a gold. But they will have a tough task, drawn against, Zheng Bo and Gao Ling, the No 2 seeds from China, who will have a partisan crowd backing them. Emms and Robertson are calling for all Britons watching on television to give them their support. Sounds like a case for Yuri Geller.
1435 BST: At the boxing arena, Farani Tavui, the Samoa light-heavyweight, has been taken out of the stadium on a stretcher after a blow to the head by Marijo Sivolija-Jelica, of Croatia. Initial reports suggest that he will be OK.
