Archery: Alan Wills moved forward to Friday’s medal rounds in the individual competition as he reached the quarter-finals with two close wins over Italians yesterday. Wills, 27, beat Mauro Nespoli 103-99 and then scraped past Marco Galiazzo 110-109 to earn a spot in the last eight. The two other Great Britain competitors, Simon Terry and Laurence Godfrey, were beaten in their first matches.
Canoeing: Fiona Pennie’s hopes of reaching today’s final of the Women’s K1 slalom suffered a hammer blow in yesterday’s first run as she missed a gate and was given a 50-second penalty. She finished in seventeenth position and was eliminated. “After training for four years to get here, it’s pretty heart-breaking,” she said. “The 50-second penalty was a killer. On the first run all our coaches thought it was in, and in our video it looked it, but I guess that’s the way sport goes.” Fencing Richard Kruse narrowly missed out on a place in the quarter-finals of the individual foil when lost 10-9 to Peter Joppich, a three-time world champion from Germany. Earlier, Kruse, 25, had beaten Virgil Saliscan, of Romania, 15-6.
Judo: Winston Gordon was beaten in his first contest in the 90kg weight class by Khurshid Nabiev, of Uzbekistan. Gordon, 31, had reached the quarter-finals in Athens four years ago.
