Jeremy Whittle in Beijing
Attend a special evening hosted by Mike Atherton
Chris Hoy took his second gold medal of the Beijing Olympics tonight as Team GB yet again dominated the racing in the Laoshan velodrome. The Scot's peerless victory was supported by Ross Edgar, who took silver behind Hoy in the men's kierin.
As Hoy's efforts to win three golds took flight, Bradley Wiggins sealed his first target, gold in the men's individual pursuit, with a dominant victory. If, based on his form in qualifying, Wiggin's success had been predictable, the big surprise came in the success of 20 year old Steven Burke, who took bronze riding his first major individual pursuit competition.
Hoy now has the men's sprints to come and few would bet against him sealing an incredible Olympic campaign with a third gold medal. With the team pursuit and Madison still to come, Wiggins's campaign for three golds is also right on track. Both he and Burke will now play a key role in the hunt for team pursuit gold, while Wiggins will be joined by Mark Cavendish for Tuesday's Madison.
In the points race, Chris Newton added to Britain's medal haul with a bronze medal, after he slipped from the silver medal position in the final moments of the race. This nonetheless, was an unexpected success that merely served to emphasise British supremacy.
Yet more medals are guaranteed tomorrow, when Rebecca Romero and Wendy Houvenaghel go head to head in the women's individual pursuit final, thus guaranteeing both gold and silver medals for Team GB.
The pursuiting pair, who are sharing a flat in the Olympic village and a coach in Dan Hunt, have been riding faster and faster as the competition has progressed. Hunt, loyalties torn, will watch from the stands, with coaching duties passed on to other members of Team GB staff.
