London 2012 Olympic organisers were last night embroiled in an embarrassing gaffe after an image of Myra Hindley was used to promote the Games.
The face of the notorious serial killer flashed up in the background of an official celebration of the handover in downtown Beijing.
Downing Street and the mayor of London have condemned the use of the controversial painting by Yorkshire artist Michael Harvey, which was shown during a three-minute video promoting London’s cultural heritage during a post-closing ceremony party.
Her face was included as part of a six-minute film by Visit London, the agency to promote tourism in the capital.
It was shown on a loop at an invitation only party at London House attended by Gordon Brown, Boris Johnson, the London mayor, Tessa Jowell, the Olympics minister, and Sebastian Coe, chairman of London 2012.
The 11ftx 9ft image of Hindley, who remains reviled six years after her death for the 1960s torture and murder of four children, was seen briefly in the video as the camera panned through an art gallery.
Millions of TV viewers saw the image which was inadvertently included as part of a montage. It was picked up by BBC technicians.
"We recognise it is of course highly offensive to a lot of people," a spokesman for the mayor said. "The mayor is deeply disturbed and has made it clear that the film should not be shown in London House again."
London 2012 officials stressed that the film was not part of the handover ceremony and was not shown in the Olympic stadium.
Hindley was jailed for life along with her lover Ian Brady for the murders of four children between 1963 and 1964 in what became known as the ‘Moors Murders”. She died in custody in 2002.
The painting of Hindley, made from children’s handprints, caused controversy when it was first shown as part of the Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1997.
The black and white image was vandalised while on display and, although eventually removed, its showcase led to the resignation of four members of the academy who left in disgust.
The tourist board Visit London said in a statement: “This is a general three minute video of London in which an artwork by Marcus Harvey very fleetingly appears.
“The video is not for general public use and has been used many times over the last few years to show to the tourism trade.
“There has never been a complaint made about the video up until this point. However, if any offence has been caused, we will withdraw it from use with immediate effect.”
Liberal Democrat Olympics spokesman Tom Brake said: “British art definitely represents some of the ‘best of British’, but of all the many masterpieces that could have been used this was the most regrettable and the least inspired choice.”

I have a print of this in my house, i dont see anything wrong with it
lianne, leeds, yorkshire
This painting doesn't promote murderers; it is a portrait of a sick and twisted human being. Its huge size contributes to our feelings of powerlessness. Standing before the painting, we feel like those helpless children, & THAT is why people get so upset.
Liz, Long Beach, USA
...not for general public view, ....being shown at the olympics? this picture is offensive to even to most liberal of minds. wrong picture, wrong pr team, wrong visit london management? judging by their feeble comments, they really dont get it.
erica, london, uk
There is the question over whether it is tasteless and offensive but also what has it got to do with London? The artist is from Yorkshire and Hindley from Manchester
Graham, Bristol, UK
Non story. Gordon Brown trying to take the headlines away from "ping pong's coming home" Boris. Boo

Geoff-Banbury~Lesley Ann's mum couldn't identify her body, she confirmed audio of Lesley distressed whilst obscenely photographed. 44 yrs on Keith's family pray his body will be found. Pauline's family waited 24yrs. John Kilbride & Edward Evans families also suffered pain & loss. Where's the humour?

I think this has said it all the U.K as to take a good look at it self.
Stop looking at problems in the other parts of the world.
We are in a mess and trying to cover it up with the game is like brushing it under the carpet.
So let put the great back in to G.B
MARTIN , MANCHESTER, ENGLAND
Funny. As an American, that picture is meaningless to me. It is without content. Is there such a thing as temporary art? At some point this will be a really large conversation piece. Now it creates a visceral response in Brits. Fifty years from now you will have to explain who it is.
Alan, Louisville, KY, USA
Art is meant to provoke the senses, and therefore has it's place, where people see it by choice!
However, pretending that we are a country free of child cruelty, murder, peadophelia, violence and deliquency is telling the world lies.
We are riddled with it and since Hindley it has worsened
Shaun, Newcastle, Tyneside
Another example of the wonderful 'diversity' we are expected to 'celebrate', I suppose.
L Greene, London, England
Offensive.....yes, very. It may well have a place in art, but it does not have a place in the ideals of the Olympics.
Nigel, Lincoln,
To all those who support the showing of the picture of Myra Hindley and even find it "hilarous"..would you have her portrait on your living room wall?
david redwood, london,
From what I could see, it was all about people waiting ages for a bus, then fighting to get on it, then falling over, and throwing litter around.
Compared to the drummers the chinese provided it was rather....erm ..... poor.
tris, dundee,
Personally, I think it's hilarious
Geoff, Banbury, England
The ludicrous and overrated PR industry needs to get a grip. Stop hiring pretty-but-dim young things who think crass stuff like this is "dynamic" and "edgy" and get some people in with common sense and brains to provide some balance and prevent such basic howlers.
Chris K, Cheltenham, UK
What a disgrace using a child murderer to promote London. Chief Executive, James Bidwell should be sacked, Coe should resign and we should get some professional people involved in doing this Nation proud and drop all the nepotism which is going to blight the 2012 Olympics.
Lloyd, London,
The most perverse decision that anyone, in any capacity, could have taken! Would the person who made the decision to include the most distasteful painting, with 'subliminal-type special effects', "stand up and be counted"!! An explanation is required!
Jean, newcastle upon tyne, uk
Isn't this a good time to sack all those people who promote bad art. How could that portrait of Hindley be considered art? Who would want that up the wall of their home, office, toilet or what have you?
Is this simply an example of bad taste, incompetence, stupidity or worse. Sack them all!
R. Barton, Dorset,
Is Britain really characterised by Hindley, the red bus, bus stops, cyclists, newspaper throwing, and rock groups? If these things are what makes Britain today, the path to international obscurity is certain. Time to embrace the EU wholeheartedly, one feels.
Dwight Vandryver, Scholar Green, Cheshire, UK
I have to agree with Alex. Hindley was responsible for shocking crimes, but this was a significant work of British art.
Let's learn from the Chinese what not to do: air-brush our history and problems and present a chocolate box view of the country.
John, Oxted, UK
Margaret - The tragedy which occurred is not an isolated incident and acceptance of these crimes in a form of artistic context may be a lot better than completely ignoring it until it happens again.
Just because we are so shocked and horrified by the events does not negate their happening.
Alex, London,
Having lived in Great Britain for many years now I am all too of the horror Myra Hindley represents to us over here.
However, if it is of any consolation most people seeing that video, and indeed many visitors to London, will not recognise the harrowing eyes and empty stare in that photo.
Boaz Sachs, London, London
Myra Hindley, of whom the RT Hon Ann Widdicome MP stated at Hindley's death (Radio 4): "Myra Hindley had the finest care possible" (whilst in prison). Really! And the Royal Acedemy keeping Hindley's memory - alive...
Dennis, Plymouth, UK
A Graham, suddenly a person's dress is the key indicator of competence? That explains the used car salesmen and estate agents...
Mark, Brisbane, Australia
It wasn't just the image of Hindley that was distasteful about the presentation.
Children walking over the backs of others to get in the bus was clearly promoting thug 'culture' as was the barbarians at the gate trying to climb into the opened up upper deck of the 'bus' (burglars?).
BP Vallance, Corfu, Greece
Just what are we thinking? Who makes these decisions?
Is it any wonder most people already think it's going to be a Terminal 5 type disaster.
We should be looking at what the Chinese have done here, and taking their lead. These games have been the best of the modern era.
Buck up London!
S.Stern, London,
Thinking that using a child murderer may not be the best way to tempt people to visit the UK is not censorship, it's common sense. Would anyone advocate using a picture of 7/7? Art is in the eye of the beholder. But some of us know garbage when we see it, no matter what it's called.
S.C. Huldig, Leiden, NL
The artwork was by Marcus Harvey not " Michael "Harvey as the third paragraph proclaims. If you're going to report on the latest moral outrage at least get the names right!.
Patrick, London, UK
This was truly shocking. For this 'art' to be shown to give a representation of GB does not augur well for the 20012 Olympics. What a gaffe.
Avril, Oxon, GB
What in God's name were these people thinking of? If ordinary people were as bad as doing their job as some of this lot they would have no doubt been sacked. So where are all the resignations? 'Come to Britain and have your children become a victim of a serial child killer'...does it get any worse?
judy, Liverpool, England
I think the brief glimpse of a portrait of a killer is far less distateful than having Leona Lewis sing. I mean really. Is that best we could do?
Raemond, Caerdydd, Cymru
Forget Hindley, wasn't having the top deck of a London bus peel open an odd thing to have at the centrepiece of London's bit at the Beijing closing ceremony? It was reminiscent of a rather grim event the day after we won the games.
Harry, london,
Looking at Boris last night shows you how far we have to go.
A complete mess of a man compared to the others he shared the stage with. One look at his dishevelled form, and you could see what the future for London holds...
Not encouraging...
A.Graham, Brighton,
oh, thank Visit London show us a true london. Is she a role model of london 2012, mate?
Cris, melbourne, australia
Alex - Psuedo-intellectual rubbish & very muddled thinking from you!
Should the families of victims of Hindley have copies on their walls to show how they have accepted tragedy?
The piece was the usual desperate attention-seeking by a contemporary 'artist'.
We are not all fools.
Margaret, Aberystwyth, Wales
It was an extremely bad decision to use an image of Hindley. What next to show of Britain, an image of Sutcliffe?
Regarding the Cinese and the little girl.
At the 1948 Olympics, Wembely Staium, our torch bearer was not even in the GB Team. He was picked for his looks.
Ron Taylor,
London
Ron Taylor, London, England
If Visit London are so determined to smear Great Britain and London in this manner perhaps they should include portraits of some of our more celebrated murderers in their video to entice more tourists - Crippen, Christie, Haigh and Dr Shipman may be suitable candidate to be included on their video.
Dr C Majumdar, Calcutta, India
Ming you don't know what you're talking about. That image in my eyes represents the ability to accept tragedy and put it into context of some shape and form.
Other countries still jail protestors or riot when images of their diety are published. Britain is in 2008, others are stuck in the 1600s.
Alex, London,
Considering we gave the Chinese a hard time over... well, everything, fair play if they (and anyone else) wants to rip into us, of which there are countless opportunities.
Howard, Manchester,
Thanks Ming,
At least the British admit a gaffe, the Chinese on the other hand, hide little girls with crooked teeth, behind curtains, fake, fireworks, piano performances, ethnic nationalities (actually 56 Han kids) etc, etc. Beijing has had its turn, move along nao!
Eddie, Beijing, China
I thought the Chinese will learn a little bit of democracy from the world in this Olympics. But instead the British learnt censorship from the Chinese.
Leonid, London,
British Arts = Tasteless arts
Morern British Culture = Promoting murderers
Shameful!
