London's Olympic handover festivities in The Mall were marred for hundreds of people when they were denied entry despite having tickets.
Security officers closed the entrance barriers to the 2012 party in front of Buckingham Palace, citing overcrowding, just before the most crucial part of the closing ceremony in Beijing, when Boris Johnson was handed the Olympic flag.
Mark Jensen, 28, from Fulham, West London, said that he was bitterly disappointed that he could not get inside. “I'm absolutely gutted, I've been looking forward to this for ages. If they can't organise this, how are they going to organise the Games?”
Organisers had used a ballot to distribute 40,000 tickets to the event, which included performances by some of the country's biggest music acts, but on the day said that there was not enough space for all the ticketholders. There were also problems with some of the screens, with the picture being lost for parts of the ceremony.
However, for the majority of the crowd the atmosphere was one of enthusiasm and patriotism, unseen since the capital's successful bid for the Games in 2005. As Mr Johnson received the flag, thousands of people began to chant: “Boris, Boris.”
Many of those who attended attributed the patriotic atmosphere to the medal haul in Beijing.
Marie Bell, from Essex, who was wearing a Union Jack hat and waving a flag, said that the capital had caught “Olympic fever”. “Everyone is on a high because of everyone doing so well in Beijing. Before, no one was that excited about the Olympics and everyone was just worried about whether we'd be able to afford it,” she said.
Margaret Hodge, the Culture Minister, also attended the celebrations in The Mall. She told The Times that the success of Beijing had changed the focus from funding concerns. “It's just a fantastic atmosphere here. There's enormous enthusiasm, it's reaching people that sports have never reached,” she said.
After the ceremony the crowd was treated to performances by artists such as Scouting for Girls, The Feeling, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Will Young. The event ended with a flypast by the Red Arrows.
Brian Elliott, from Southampton, said: “It's been brilliant. We were glad that Boris didn't drop the flag. Though he could have tidied himself up and maybe buttoned up his jacket.”
Sir Keith Mills, deputy chairman of Locog, the 2012 organising committee, told The Times that the “penny had finally dropped” and Londoners were celebrating the opportunity of hosting the Games.

I was one people with tickets for the visa 2012 party in the Mall who were locked out of the event. Half way through the concert security let everyone into the area that was previously "too full" including people who didn't have tickets or wristbands, that makes no sense to me at all!

The event was amazing. I was so glad I got some tickets. Fantastic performances from everyone and good organisation. If anyone knows the name of the Choir and the song they sang, I would be very happy to know!

Queued there at 10.30am, got in at noon, was at the front near the stage.....there were a few technical hitches but the performers /guest gave their all and appeared to soak up the amazing atmosphere. The crowd were amazing, singing along and flag waving. The Red arrows fly-over was spectacular ...

Security gourds will wreck the London Olympics as they will enforce the rules 100% and people will que for days, not hours. London is run by jobsworths and the Olympics will be no different.
Thats if any one makes it past T5 with out dieing of starvation in the ques there.
MR W Jones, Liscard, England
A problem with ticket organisation and jobsworth security guards? I feel a terrible sense of foreboding.

Johnson needs to pull his socks up if he is not to become a laughing stock. He needs to learn that his job sometimes requires a bit of dignity. Has he forgotten how Michael Foot was mauled after his shambolic appearance at the Cenotaph?

Boris is Boris, get used to it people, he's not going to change, I think he represents London well, uncomfortable in the global spotlight.
Anyway, "included performances by some of the country's biggest music acts", really? Since when? Or did I miss something?
Bob, Cheam, England
We travelled over 100 miles and got in after 2 hour queue. When we got in we raced to the stage (party already started) to be told we were not allowed past a fence that had been put up due to overcrowding. Sat on The Mall with 1000's of others in front of screen that showed very litte. DISAPPOINTED!
Gary Burlingham - Hall, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, England
It seemed clear that Johnson lacked maturity and experience during the 2008 Olympic closing ceremony in Beijing, with his hands-in-pockets performance. Johnson has all the ability to become an unquestionable national embarrassment, though his has four years to quickly grow up.

It was embarrassing seeing Boris Johnson with his jacked unbuttoned accepting the Olympic flag. On his way back he even put his hands in his pocked. No class.
Jan Besseling, Vancouver, Canada
We got there early and stayed until the end-and there was plenty of room.It was relaxed and not very crowded, so I can't see why lots more weren't allowed in..
