Chris Hoy, a triple gold medal-winner for Great Britain in Beijing last month, unveiled the design yesterday of the £80million cycling centre at the heart of the London 2012 Olympic Park that promises to include the world's fastest indoor track.
The Scottish sprint rider was on the panel that chose the design from six submissions and said that it would be the best facility in the world. The venue comprises a 6,000-seat velodrome under a “floating” steel and timber roof, a 400-metre BMX circuit, a one-mile road circuit and a sixkilometre mountain bike course.
Ron Webb, one of the foremost cycling track constructors, is working on the design of the pine circuit and Mike Taylor, the architect, said: “There are nuances within the rules of world cycling that mean we can produce a cutting-edge track where world records can be broken.”
British Cycling, which is based at the velodrome in Manchester, a legacy of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, said that there is a need for more world-class facilities in Britain because of the enthusiasm generated by the team's unprecedented Olympic success in China. Peter King, the chief executive, said: “We cannot cope with all the kids coming in to use the limited facilities we have.”
Matt Goss, of Australia, won the second stage of the Tour of Britain in Newbury, Berkshire, yesterday after a frenetic and twisting finale left several riders on the tarmac, and Alessandro Petacchi, the race leader from Italy, fuming. Goss sprinted clear of Julian Dean, of New Zealand, and Chris Sutton, of Australia, to seal victory. Roger Hammond, of Britain, finished fourth.
Afterwards Petacchi, the winner of Sunday's first stage in London and sixth yesterday, criticised the safety of the stage finish, while accepting that he is likely to cede his overall lead of the race in today's hilly third stage over Exmoor, finishing in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset.
