Aquatics
Beijing tally 2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze
Progress Britain won four golds, three silvers and two bronzes in this
year’s World Championships in Rome. Tom Daley won the 10 metres diving,
making a great leap forward from Beijing, where he came seventh at the age
of 14; Keri-Anne Payne won the open-water 10km swim and Liam Tancock and
Gemma Spofforth (50 metres and 100 metres backstroke respectively) won in
the pool. In synchronised swimming, Britain are still building a squad under
a new performance director, who started in 2007. In water polo, the women’s
team won the European B league this year, with the men coming fourth. Both
need to compete in the European A league by 2011 to qualify for the Olympics.
Venue Work on Zaha Hadid’s signature 160-metre wavy roof began in March
and is nearly complete. The £244 million venue’s two swimming pools and
diving pool are being dug. Water polo will be in a temporary venue and
open-water swimming on the Serpentine, Hyde Park.
Archery
Beijing tally Best result: fourth
Progress No Olympic-class medals in the World Championships — although
Liam Grimwood got a silver in the compound — but Simon Terry won silver at
the World Cup finals. Tom Barber, a 18-year-old from Norfolk, will push hard
for a place. If Alison Williamson is selected, it will be her sixth Olympics.
Venue A temporary range will be built at Lord’s cricket ground.
Athletics
Beijing tally 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze
Progress Phillips Idowu won his first world title in the triple jump in
Berlin this year and Jessica Ennis won three of the categories in the
heptathlon on her way to the title. There were silver medals for Lisa
Dobriskey in the 1,500 metres and the men’s 4 x 400 metres and bronzes for
the men’s sprint relay and for Jenny Meadows in the 800 metres.
Venue The shell of the £538 million stadium is complete and the
80,000-seat arena is taking shape fast. The cable roof structure will be
lifted into place by the end of the year. What is not yet concrete is its
post-Games use. Olympic chiefs must decide whether to scale it back to a
25,000-seat athletics stadium or maintain it on a bigger scale to feature a
mixture of football, rugby and cricket.
Badminton
Beijing tally Best result: quarter-finals
Progress The English team withdrew from the World Championships in
Hyderabad, India, in August, citing security fears. Nathan Robertson and
Anthony Clark won the Singapore Open, their first Super Series title, but
both are in their thirties. Rajiv Ouseph, 23, has gone from the world No 50
in singles to No 21 and beat the world No 13 in the French Open this week.
Venue Very likely to be held at Wembley Arena, the venue for the World
Championships, after London organisers scrapped a £40 million temporary
building in North Greenwich to save money. The plan has to be ratified.
Basketball
Beijing tally Did not compete
Progress In their first season in Europe’s Division A, the men topped
their group to qualify for EuroBasket, but lost all three matches against
Europe’s leading sides. The women, although relegated to Division B, were
granted dispensation to stay at the top level in 2010.
Venue Lucky to have the O2 arena, a proven hit with the NBA, which is
expected to run the 2012 basketball finals in its European venue of choice.
It will be renamed North Greenwich Arena during the Games because of the
IOC’s “no-branding” rules. The qualifying will be in a £58 million temporary
arena on the Olympic Park. Work began this month.
Boxing
Beijing tally 1 gold, 2 bronze
Progress No medals at the World Championships in Milan last month, but
the cupboard is far from bare. Khalid Yafai, the flyweight who boxed in
Beijing, would have won a medal but for a bad judging decision, while Scott
Cardle emerged as a genuine medal hope. The other Olympian still an amateur,
Bradley Saunders, missed Milan with a broken thumb but has been boxing well,
while Luke Campbell, the bantamweight, became the first British boxer to
become a European amateur champion in 47 years last November.
Venue After refusing to move to Wembley Arena to accommodate
cost-cutting plans, boxing will be held at the ExCeL Centre at Royal
Victoria Dock after a £24 million refit of the exhibition centre in 2012.
Canoeing
Beijing tally 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze
Progress With Tim Brabants, who won two flatwater medals in Beijing,
taking a year off, the team failed to win any medals in this year’s World
Championships, but Rachel Cawthorn, 21, came fourth in the 500 metres single
kayak, 0.6sec away from bronze. She also came fifth in the women’s four. The
men’s four reached their first world final, coming seventh. In the slalom
World Championships, Britain had their best display since 1983. The women’s
K1 team won gold and Lizzie Neave took bronze in the individual contest. The
men’s K1 team took silver and the men’s C2 team got bronze.
Venue The flatwater events will take place at existing facilities at
Eton Dorney, Windsor, and whitewater canoeing is getting a £31 million
world-class facility in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, including a 300-metre
competition course and a 160-metre training course. Construction started in
July.
Cycling
Beijing tally 8 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze
Progress Not as dominant as 2008, coming third in the World Track
Championships after claiming only two golds for Victoria Pendleton and the
women’s team pursuit. Steve Peat won his first world title in the downhill
mountain biking and Mark Cavendish won six stages of the Tour de France.
Venue The £94 million velodrome — Sir Chris Hoy had a say in its design
— will be completed in early 2011. The first lower tier of seating is
already in place and its double-curved roof is taking shape.
Equestrianism
Beijing tally 2 bronze
Progress Tina Cook won two gold medals at the European Eventing
Championships, with Piggy French claiming silver in the individual event and
William Fox-Pitt fourth. In the European Show-Jumping Championships, Britain
came sixth.
Venue Planning application for a £10 million temporary venue for
three-day eventing in Greenwich will be lodged next month despite fierce
objections by some local residents to the closure of London’s oldest Royal
Park and the lack of a legacy for the sport. Olympic chiefs have promised
not to chop down trees and have reduced the time it is closed to the public
from six weeks to a month.
Fencing
Beijing tally Best result: last 16
Progress Britain’s men’s foil team came sixth in the World
Championships in Turkey, missing a place in the semi-finals by one point to
Germany. Richard Kruse, a member of the team, won a silver in the European
Championships in Bulgaria, beating Laurence Halsted, his compatriot, in the
semi-final. The team came fourth.
Venue The revamped ExCeL Centre.
Football
Beijing tally Did not compete
Progress An English team will represent Great Britain and could be
medal contenders after qualifying with ease for the 2010 World Cup.
Venue Will use existing stadiums, including Wembley, Old Trafford and
Villa Park.
Gymnastics
Beijing tally 1 bronze
Progress Beth Tweddle won her second world title this month on the
floor exercise, rather than her favoured bars, delighting her home fans.
Daniel Keatings won the first medal in the all-around event by a British
man, taking silver. Louis Smith won silver in the European Championships on
the horse.
Venue Artistic gymnastics will take place in the O2, where a dry run
for the World Championships this month were a success. Rhythmic gymnastics
is expected to move from a scrapped temporary venue to Wembley Arena,
subject to approval.
Handball
Beijing tally Did not compete
Progress Britain have never qualified for the Olympics and they will
have to prove they are competitive to do so for 2012. Having had their
funding cut in half to £1.4 million, the task is difficult. The women’s team
qualified for the 2009-10 European Championships, but lost their first two
matches.
Venue Foundations of a new £24 million arena are in place and the main
structure will be finished by next summer.
Hockey
Beijing tally Best result: fifth in men’s
Progress England’s men won the European Championships, beating Germany
5-3. The women’s youth team won gold, beating Australia with a golden goal,
at the Youth Olympic Festival in January.
Venue A temporary centre on the Olympic Park will house two pitches
with seating for 15,000 and 5,000 spectators respectively. Earthworks begin
early next year.
Judo
Beijing tally Best result: quarter-finals
Progress A poor World Championships in the Netherlands in August was
rescued by Karina Bryant, the four-times European champion, winning a silver
medal in the +78kg category. She beat the Olympic bronze medal-winner in the
first round but lost to the Olympic champion in the final. Sarah Clark won a
silver in the -63kg category at the European Championships in April.
Venue The revamped ExCeL Centre.
Modern pentathlon
Beijing tally 1 silver
Progress A silver in the women’s team event at the World Championships
in Crystal Palace, South London, but the individual performances were
disappointing. Heather Fell, second in Beijing, was ninth and the best man
was thirteenth.
Venue Running, riding and shooting to be held in Greenwich Park;
fencing in the handball arena.
Rowing
Beijing tally 2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze
Progress Promising with so many medal-winners in Beijing taking the
year off. The new-look men’s four was the only boat to win gold at the World
Championships in Poland but there were four silvers and a bronze in Olympic
classes, the pick of which were Katherine Grainger’s unexpected silver in
the women’s single scull and Alan Campbell, in the men’s single, setting the
second-fastest time in history but still being pipped to the line.
Venue Work has started on a £5.6 million upgrade of existing facilities
at Eton Dorney, including improved spectator access and warm-up areas.
Sailing
Beijing tally 4 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze
Progress A strong year, with world championship wins for Paul Goodison
in the Laser and Nick Dempsey in the men’s windsurfing, as well as many
other good results. Giles Scott was fourth in the Finn World Championship,
but spent most of the year jostling for the World Cup title with Ed Wright,
who is now the world No 2. Lucy Macgregor is up to No 2 in the rankings in
the new Elliott-class match-racing event.
Venue The £7 million venue at Weymouth and Portland Harbour in Dorset
was finished last year — the first 2012 venue to be completed.
Shooting
Beijing tally Best finish: sixth
Progress The year has been dominated by a row over the location for the
2012 shooting events — with British Shooting calling for the venue to be
moved from Woolwich to Bisley — and the decision to make the team’s
performance director redundant after a 76 per cent cut in funding. The World
Championships take place next year.
Venue A planning application for a £42 million temporary venue is
imminent in the face of continued opposition by some in the shooting
community who want a legacy for the sport.
Table tennis
Beijing tally Did not compete
Progress Paul Drinkhall, 19, won a silver medal at the junior World
Championships and helped to steer England into the top flight of the
European Championships for the first time in ten years, but he is still
outside the world’s top 100. The women came 21st in the European competition.
Venue The revamped ExCeL Centre.
Taekwondo
Beijing tally 1 bronze
Progress A bronze and a fifth place in Beijing were good achievements,
but there was little progress at the World Championships in Denmark this
month. Sarah Stevenson, the 2001 World Champion, was hampered by a finger
injury and lost her first bout. Craig Brown was beaten in the quarter-final
of the men’s middleweight, as was Michael Harvey at bantamweight and Tony
Grisman at featherweight.
Venue The revamped ExCeL Centre.
Tennis
Beijing tally Best finish: last 16
Progress As always it is all about one man. Andy Murray at one point
became world No 2 but still lacks a grand-slam title. The next best British
man, Alex Bogdanovic, is No 189 and Britain have slipped out of the
Euro-Africa top group in the Davis Cup. Better news for the women, where
there are three players in the top 100.
Venue All-England Club, Wimbledon.
Triathlon
Beijing tally Best finish: twelfth
Progress Al Brownlee has been dominant this year, winning all five
World Championship Series events and the world title itself in Australia.
Helen Jenkins is fifth in the women’s world rankings after coming third in
the world Grand Final.
Venue A £7 million temporary venue will be built in Hyde Park.
Volleyball
Beijing tally Did not compete
Progress Steady, with 14 men and seven women competing professionally
for European teams. The women qualified for the European League for the
first time. On the beach, Denise Johns and Lucy Boulton reached their first
European Tour semi-final at the European Masters in Blackpool.
Venue Indoor volleyball to be held in Earls Court and beach volleyball
on a £5.5 million temporary structure on Horse Guards Parade.
Weightlifting
Beijing tally Best finish: fifteenth
Progress Developing a young squad under their new Hungarian coach,
Tamas Feher. Zoe Smith, 14, won gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games in
India and Peter Kirkbride took silver in the European Under-23 Championships
in Poland last week.
Venue The revamped ExCeL Centre.
Wrestling
Beijing tally Did not compete
Progress Got two fifth places in this year’s World Championships
through two Eastern European “signings” in Krasimir Krastanov, from
Bulgaria, and Yana Stadnik. Britain had three home-grown men in the top 20
at the worlds — Leon Rattigan, Jatinder Rakhra and Mike Grundy — who could
be contenders come 2016.
Venue The revamped ExCeL Centre.
